Wasting 1-2 hours to smog test station and up to $50-60 every other year to verify that your engine does not spew out too much smog.

$40 every year just to check for codes. What a waste.

I just google and read about it, man it suck to live in the state that have smog test, here we pay 5 dollar for inspection, as long your horn work, you pass the test lol. and most place here just charge 5 dollar for inspection without check anything. BTW its ok to drive car that WILL fail smog test thru the state that require smog test ? cause my camaro is having full bolt on, every emission thing is remove, like EGR, AIR pump, and full race header with no CAT. Im am making a 2000+ miles going to california. I wonder its ok to drive car their.

I'm sure you'll be fine since your just visiting? I'm running test pipes, but when I have to smog in 2 years or so I have to put the cats back on.

Dude, I think it's illegal to remove your emissions equipment...

Who cares... If they don't catch it on the "inspection" that is their problem IMO.

Here in MS, they dont require emission/smog test. No one check for it, and no one care for it here.

I think it's now about $80 between annual safety and emissions testing. That's if you don't need anything. It's also getting hard to find a dyno for the OBDI vehicles ..at least at some place you trust not to fail you to the tune of the $250 limit for compliance. The OBDII is pretty fudge factor proof in that regard.

Yeah, we had it in Colorado in the late '90s. No safety inspection; apparently CO didn't care if you had no brakes and no turn signals, as long as what was pooting out of your tailpipe was clean!

In Ontario, you have to get a $35 'Drive Clean' test every two years.

I always pass with flying colours, even with a CEL on last time.

Personally, in an oil burning car, I'd want to eliminate that as much as possible - I'd put 10W-40 or 20W-50 oil in for the test. A QL 'down there' (CA) should allow this as an option.

If they only use 5w30 or 10w30, I'd put a bottle of STP oil treatment in with the oil. Just eliminate that possibilty that it is causing a problem.

I heard older car dont require smog test or inspection something like that ? when I say older, im not talk about 2000, some thing like 1969 around those time.

Changing the oil can help sometimes. No miracles, but it has helped others for sure.
Don't take off your PCV system stuff! It will make you fail the visual, and is not likely to help, esp with high HC.
HC is generally condition and tune up stuff [misfires and partial combustion], and CO is mixture.

Not true... If the rings are stuck and there is excess blow-by and this is re-vented into the engine it will cause excess H.C.'s because the CAT's can't keep up.

I'd try the 10w30. Also make sure the car is fully warmed up with about a 20-30 minute drive before you pull into the test station, and leave it idling while waiting. Since you passed the rest, maybe it wasn't up to operating temp when the low speed test was performed.

Definitely!

Before the last test I drove it for over an hour to warm it up. Test station encourages appointments to make this easier.

I am going to disagree with you here. Changing the oil just before a smog test is a trick us Ca folk have been using for years to get through the Ca emission test.

I hope that the OP will post the before and after results for us to see.

Passed.

Changed plugs, air and filter, and oil (MaxLife 5w30).
Ran down to about 3 gallons, then put in two 12oz bottles of Iso-Heet (isopropyl alcohol) for good measure.

Failed again at first today, but then passed the 15mph HC by 6ppm on the second try. Getting the car good and hot for the second try is what made the difference.

Originally I failed by 4ppm with a pretty hot car. Every little bit probably helps, but getting the converter hot is really important.

SL-1 might have helped -- I'll do that next time for sure.
