hi i have a 08 dodge power wagon with the hemi. i changed the factory fill at 2500mi when the oil light came on. now at 5000 its on again. i put in amsoil asm 0w20 when i changed it the first time .used a mobil 1 filter because amsoil did'nt have one for the hemi....theard size changed in 08..so should i change it out again or go some more? owners manual says 6 months or 6000 miles or when the light comes on. i just want to run the best oil and not be wasting it. please give me your ideas on what type of oci to follow. i drive off road once in a while and 50/50 in town / highway thanks

you might wanna check with your dealer to see if theres any tsb's out concerning your oil life monitor. My 08 Jeep Wrangler is having the same problem, tells me to change my oil every 2500miles, right on the dot, and I believe there is a tsb out for mine, which I think involves a reflash. As far as I know, the oil life monitor just looks at your rpms over a certain amount of time. Don't know if it looks at vehicle speed or anything like that. All I know is the only way to truly tell what shape your oil is in is to take a sample and have it tested.

The light is an idiot light to ensure even the most stupid of people change the oil on time. Similar to the "Mait. Required" light found in some Hondas etc.

If you run a good Quality oil like Amsoil, or Pennzoil Platnium you should be able to double the reccomended mileage in your owners manual fairly easy.

The best way to tell is to send a sample to a lab like Blackstone Labs for an analysis. Then you will really know how long you can run the oil safely.

My 08 Liberty OC light came on in 8.5 months and 3445 miles. I guess the 6 month time period is not factored into the OC light programming.

Correction, the light came on at 3445 miles total on the Jeep, but I had logged 2602 miles for that OC cycle. Total time was just under 4 months. This was mostly highway driving.

2500 miles is ridiculous. Has to be something wrong unless you are doing a lot of high RPM driving or towing heavy loads a lot which works the engine hard. I just picked up an 08 1500 Ram w/HEMI last night and my manual talks about the oil change light or 6/6,000. No way I am doing OC's, even with conventional, every 2500. If mine does that I will just reset it. My OC's will be done every 5000 w/ synthetic.

Funny, I have the exact opposite on my new 08 Sierra Crew. I changed the factory oil at 1,500 miles with PP and a wix oil/air filter. And according to the latest monthly OnStar report (I was e-mailed) my trucks not due for an oil change until 14,000+ miles. I have 4500 on her now, and the trucks OLM still shows 68%, go figure. But I’m going to change the oil/filer at 7,350 regardless of what either OnStar or my OLM says.

The OLM in my Chevy's did seem to go forever. I always changed at 5K but it always had anywhere from 40-60% left showing.

How do you like that Powerwagon? I think they are awesome and wish there was more factory vehicles like that!

I know. Thought of that last night when I was posting. I already registered for a new account and will stop using this one once I get the activation e-mail from the site.

For warranty protection, you need to either change the oil at the recommended interval, or have an analysis report every time proving that the oil was still good on the day you did change it. Otherwise, if there is any warranty claim involving a lubricated part of the engine, you might be left holding the bill.

Why? The oil is still good. OnStar is just getting their info from the OLM, and the OLM has been extensively tested by GM. The report I read is that the OLM reads zero life left in the oil when half the zinc is remaining. The oil life curve is low (short oil life) for short, cool trips and for hard, hot driving (towing etc.). The oil life curve is very high (long oil life) for easy, longer runs at moderate speed.

I've got a '08 Power Wagon with 26,000 miles on it now. Actually it's a U.S. Gov't work truck for me.

My light came on too the first three cycles at 2600 miles and I got the oil changed at approximately 3000 miles. So after the 3rd change at around 9000 miles with the light, it hasn't come on again until 15,000, 21,000, and now which should be 27,000.

I think they have it show early the first three changes for simply break in purposes and its certainly nothing to be concerned about.

Well, it's my first run on PP and my engine is still new so I'll change it at the 6,000 mile mark for the next two changes and then run 8-9k mile OCI depending on what Blackstone recommends.

Also, I wouldn't extend oil changes past the "light" while under warranty. And I certainly wouldn't count on Dodge to honor a Blackstone report in the rare event you do have a lubrication problem and run past what Dodge claim's you need to change your oil at.

Just do what your manual says and your covered.

I would not listen to the onstar, 14,000 miles is a little to long!

I would stick to a 5000-7500 mile OCI
