I did an oil change yesterday on the '02 impala. I used havoline 5w30. I had a quart with a 02/03/10 date on it, it was SM. It had the texaco star on the bottle. The remainder was bought recently, it had the chevron emblem. I called the 800 number on the older texaco bottle, and asked if it was OK to use it. The person I got said they recommend going by the 5 year rule, if bottled more than 5 years ago, don't use it. I mixed the SM with the newer SN. Would the readers have used this quart, or discarded it?

100% used it of course, no doubt!!!

I've used oil older than that before, never had a problem.
However, I don't go past 12years, nor do I ignore the Sx rating.
But having a couple older cars makes it easier to use oil with less rating.
