OK, I've never done the blot of oil on bond paper and placed 2 drops on paper.

Here is what it looks like.

Any comments from the experts?

Thanks in advance! Bill

Well I may have several years of blots, but I really don't know that much about reading them, except to think that if they look nasty, it's probably not good. But yours look fairly nice, so at least I don't see anything bad happening.

Its really in focus. The blots are dull and not sharp. I have some out of focus ones too!

There's one I took of a friends oil that came out of a toyota truck - he'd been driving around with a busted radiator and I found quite an amount of air in the radiator itself. Don't know for how long it had been that way. Replaced the radiator and flushed the system. It's probably good that he travels only 30 miles to and from work...the truck still seems to run ok today, almost 2 years later.

When I changed the especially black oil that didn't seem to drain evenly (can't say I blame this taxed substance), I took a blot sample of the dipstick on a piece of white paper bag that I had in my car at the time. Let me just say there's now fluid soak presence to it, just dirty rings upon rings as the oil bled outward. From the reference blot guide I have, it was way past due/change immediately. If I was up with all this digital image stuff like my father I would post an image, but unfortunately that's not the case...sorry.

I gave his truck a short oil change to help clean-up. This experience at what's otherwise his expense, opened-up a probably aspect of just what engines can take/put up with, at least for the more immediate time frame. I guess you could say I'm a little less "paranoid" and a little more amazed.

The original blots look ok as far as I can make out, but I to am new at this.

Take care.

After looking at the photos that I took the one I posted looked in focus (better then the other ones) I decided to scan it with my page scanner.

Oops.. lindermant was correct. Its out of focus compared to the scan.

Sorry for the smudge, hopefully you can still make everything out. That was just on regular computer paper. I'll try a business card next time.

First, the oil blot has to wait a while to show anything. If a dark ring or spot shows up after the oil spreads out, that is dirt. Suggest upgrading the filter. If the spot stays the same color and just fades into the paper, then no dirt is indicated. I think it only indicates if there is dirt in the oil.

did this few months ago
I installed this setup at 73434 miles. I installed 2 Pure One PL30001 into my Perma Cool Dual remote setup. I took out the bypass threaded nipple and reinstalled the 3/4 16 threaded nippled back in. I filled up with about 8 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum 5W30. I have just over 74500 miles now (1066 miles on filters) and the oil is looking very good. Looks like the TP filter is doing a excellent job. I will be sending in a sample for analysis at the 2k mile mark.
On the left is Virgin PP 5w30 and the right after 1066 miles. An analysis will tell me if my nice looking oil has any wear issues floating around in it, but for now this looks pretty good.

Density or darkness of center spot indicates soot load or oxide insolubles. Distace of radial travel indicates dispersency.
