Oil and filter recommendation 2012 tsx

1. What kind of vehicle you have? Acura tsx 2012
2. What your owner's manual says -- not just viscosity, but certifications (look for acronyms like API SM, ILSAC GF-4, etc.) and change intervals as well? 0w20; at least once a year or according to the maintenance reminder.
3. Where you live? Quebec, Canada
4. How you drive (easy? hard? fast? slow?) Fast and sometimes hard.
5. What your daily drive is like (short trips? long trips? city? highway?) Mostly short trips
6. Whether your car has any known problems. Nothing. First oil change due soon

Thinking about using RedLine 0w20 and K&N any toughs and recommendation? I do not drive that much about 15k km a year. Thanks!

Personally, i would change the Factory Fill at 35% Oil Life Monitor or 8 months. Do the first fill with Acura Genuine 0w-20 Synthetic-Blend, run that down to 35% or 8 months. Then run a high quality 0w-20 synthetic like Pennzoil Platinum or Mobil 1 to 5% OLM or 12 months. You can use a boutique (Redline, Amsoil, Motul, ect.) but unlikely that you untilize their potentials.

As for filter, use the OEM for the first oil change. Then when you put synthetic for the second oil change, K&N or any extended performance filters are great. Honda filters arent very good at filtration, but they provide good flow.

Skip the K&N and use an OEM. Does the RedLiine meet the manufacture specs as to cirtification?

My car shows oil life by 10% interval. Its been 40% for a while so it should be around 35% by now. The car has about 6k kms on it and I got it in September. I already have a K&N oil filter so i guess i'll use that first. I also noticed that 0w20 from honda is pretty cheap. 7.2 + tax per quart. Any specific reason why you tell me to use ooem for the first oil change vs K&N?

I though honda oil filters are made by fram (with honda specification) isnt that a "bad" thing?

Use filter # 15400-PLM-A01 available at
Handa Accessories

Wix, Napa Gold, Carquest Blue Line and Purolator Pureones are all excellent alternatives to OEM filter as well.

Mobil 1 0w20
Toyota Genuine Motor Oil 0w20
Pennzoil Platinum 0w20

Realistically you can use any Top Tier name brand synthetic and get excellent life out of your engine. Choose based on availability/price.

I would stick with OEM air filters, K&N sometimes show higher Si numbers on used oil analysis.

Only reason is convenience, to just walk into Honda and say gimme 0w-20 oil and a filter. But if you wana use the K&N, go for it! I would definitely use the 0w-20 synthetic-BLEND for the first oil change. Then for the second oil change switch to synthetic. Also, the Honda OLM goes 100 90 80 70 60 50 40 30 20 15 10 5 0

Bosch D+ oil filter with Amsoil 0W-20 and your set for a 1 year OCI.

My K series runs quietest on Mobil 1. I've used both 0W-20 and 0W-30, and it purrs on both. Mine's much louder on Pennzoil synthetics for some reason. I use Purolator PureOne or Synthetic filters, for the full MM interval. I do change the filter at every oil change, rather than at every other as Honda recommends.

My '13 Accord 4 cyl just clicked 30 at 3200miles. Its jumped by 10's approx every 1000 mi.
I've never seen a 5 or 15.

I believe Honda/Acura Canada is still using the Idemitsu supplied 0w20 SM synthetic with a high VI and high Moly. Would be a good choice for your short trip usage and if you like the price even better. Maybe the dealer would even be able to get you the A01 filter bourne recommended. I think that one is Filtech/Toki Roki not the Fram (A02?).

I did read on tsx club that it runs better on M1 than PP. I was planning on changer the oil filter too for every oil change. It does not cost a lot more anyways.

I just called the dealer they do have A01 in stock!! They said its not always the case though. Is it worth it to stock up?

RedLine 0W20 is an excellent oil but if I recall correctly it does not have the API sticker. My point being that, if I am correct, you are technically voiding your engine warranty by using it. I can't even imagine a K24 engine having problems but if they questioned which oil you were using it could put you in a pickle.

I had an '04 with the K24 and changed to Mobil 1 0W20 @ 3500 miles. It ran perfectly for the five remaining years I had it and got exceptional mileage. Run your factory fill down to 15% and put what ever synthetic you want in it but you might want to keep that API symbol in mind.

That's not actually true. If the oil causes a problem with your engine, sure you have problems. But just using the oil does NOT void your warranty.

Two local dealers here in N.C. that I've talked to use two types of 0W20: one is a blend and the other syn, made by Conoco. An oil & Filter change with the blend is about $35 and the syn is much higher..I think one said $75 but not sure. Both claim quick service. I may use the $35 blend for my first change and then do a Blackstone test when it gets to 5K (if I can syphon some out) to see how well the blend holds up.
