Our Uplander has always had dino changes at the local shop. Just this last change I started doing it on my own. I chose Pennzoil Syn Blend 5w30 and Purolator Classic. Have a planned oil changed coming up in 600 miles. This car sees ONLY short trips, its driven by my mother, to and from work and to get groceries. Work is less than one mile away. So it rarely if never sees operating temp. She walks to work sometimes but its usually too hot, or raining so the van is more convenient. The only times it gets up to temp (maybe) is the 6 miles trip to walmart (one way) every now and then. I would like to switch to synthetic maybe if it would help reduce wear. Its the 3.5 liter pushrod V6, non vvt. Also what oil filter would you recommend? Im open to dino, syn blend, and full synthetic (group III)

I have the same Van, Saturn's version tho.
I use the Wix 51036 filter, it's a sneeze longer and fits just fine.
I also use Valvoline Synpower 5w30 in it.
I change the filter at 4500 miles (when the oil monitor says it's time) and change the oil and filter at the next interval at another 4500 miles.

I believe in changing the filter more frequently if I'm doing an extended OCI.
I'm at 87,000 miles and haven't had any issues.

Your mother's vehicle is likely a candidate for annual oil and filter changes. The Purolator Classic is fine, as is "Pennzoil Syn Blend 5W-30". With all these short trips, a 0W-30 is worth considering.

Ok, can you explain how the X-30 would be better?? I dont know much about 0 weights. Wouldnt it cause more wear because its thinner?

Oh my. A real honest to goodness short tripper. Constant short tripping will really beat the tar out of your oil.

IMO the answer for short tripping isn't expensive oil, it is short OCI's. Your Pennzoil blend and a Classic were a very good choice. Since you only short trip, 2,500 miles OCI's should get the oil drained before it's trashed.

Some will howl at that as it's against the common generic rules of thumb here, but I've done a UOA on one of my vehicles that was partially short tripped and got an eye opener regarding just how hard short tripping is on the oil.

Ok, sounds good. I changed it at 3000, should i reduce to the 2,500 you just mentioned? I am also a short tripper in my Accord. I do 3000 with PU and Honda filter, i get so much pushback from that (3000 oci) but oil is cheap, and I would rather have fresh, fuel/water free oil lol. Oh, Ive read here on BITOG that changing your oil too often can be a bad thing, as far as wear is concerned. true, false??

Best thing is to do a UOA, it'll give you a window to tell just how hard you are being on the oil. Once you've done one, you'll have a much better idea what kind of OCI you can do with your vehicle the way you use it.

Since you're short tripping do a single UOA at 3k and adjust accordingly would be my suggestion. If the oil is trashed at that point, you'd do shorter OCI's and if it looks like it still has some life in it then you know you can extend out a bit further.
