Just did an oil change on the Uplander, taught my little brother how to change the oil, so it was his first time. I used Mobil 1 AFE 0w30 and an AC Delco ecore. The engine DOES run quieter on this oil which is a nice perk, its not a really loud engine to begin with but it certainly does run quieter now. One concern I had was the old oil filter came off pretty easy, i used a filter wrench and it came off with little force...is that normal? I put the AC delco on as hard as I could with my hands, but I did that too with the last filter. I also saw a drip or two on the driveway when I checked for leaks once I drove it home. It could have been oil from the mess the filter made when it came off though. Im going to check tomorrow morning to see if there are any more drips. Any advice on the checking for drips or leaks thing? Also what do you think about the oil and filter used? The car calls for 5w30 but really this car sees 1/2 miles jaunts all day, my mother drives it and she transports kids at a day camp around the campus so I would say it sees about 10 or more of those 1/2 miles trips per day, between her driving to work, driving kids around work, and getting groceries after work it sees a lot of starts! So I thought the 0w30 weight might help getting the oil around the engine quicker. What do you guys think about the AC delco ecore filter? I put in pennzoil syn blend 5w30 last time and didnt see much of a difference. It did come out very dark brown to black though and only after 3000 miles. Anyway thats it, just wanted to share. By the way, the Uplander has always had dino oil changes with GTX and ProSelect Napa filter, just now switching to full synthetic at 104,000 miles.

The Van would do well with dino PYB 5W-30 at 3,000 miles With AC Delco filter changes. No such thing as a cold start in Florida. Save your money, full synthetic is way overkill.
I had the same van and traded it in once the tranny acted up. It had 160,000 miles on nothing but dealer bulk 5W-30. OCI at 6,000 mile intervals. I have seen -40F in my city. That is a cold start.

Yeah the transmission in ours had to be rebuilt, still doesnt feel right. If i used dino it would certainly be PYB! but ill keep using synthetic, its only $10 more per oil change, thats worth it to me.

I think M1 0w30 is a great choice even though you are in Fla. Maybe overkill, but it's your car and your decision. I too noticed this oil quieting down the engine...Pennzoil does it too. It seemed as time went on it wasn't as quiet anymore (w/ the M1) though.

I don't know much about ecore except what I've read here and that it's not too good. Since there are so many non-ecore choices out there, I would avoid them. As far as filter installation goes I wish all makes would just recommend a torque spec instead of 3/4 turn or however much. My Frontier gives that spec. 9 lbs. IIRC.

Hand tightening the filter as much as possible should be fine, and I haven't had a leak doing so. But if not and it leaks, another 1/4 turn with the wrench should seal it.

I been using Mobil 1 5w30 ep for the last 7 years on the wifes 2005 Malibu with the 3.5 engine with the A C Delco 47e filter. Just rolled over 100k. Best car i ever own. As a result i will only use syn. oil in my cars-even the ones i lease.

Hand tighten filter only. Don't ever put a wrench on a filter to tighten it unless you can't get your hand on it. Make sure your hands are clean and you can get a good grip. If it's installed good and snug it won't leak. Coat the gasket w oil before install, wipe the base plate of the oil filter housing so you have a clean mating surface - this also ensures that the old gasket hasn't stuck to the housing - the biggest single cause of oil filter leaks.

+1

Just to be clear, since some are referring to the word "overkill" in my post...I was referring to the weight [0w-30] possibly being overkill given your warm Florida climate (though I usually err to the side of overkill myself on most things auto-related). Given the short trips you mention this makes it a great choice.

And to be extra clear I would never, ever refer to any Mobil 1 product as overkill. It's not special as far as "syns" go besides the fact no other company makes an easily available & affordable 0w-30 to compete with it.
