I used to use the regular 90915-YZZD1 Denso/Thailand filter from the dealer. It's fine, but I'm not crazy about it. The media appears more than normally porous to me like it's for a very long life application or something. I change my oil every 5000 miles or 6 months and prefer something that appears to me to filter finer abrasives from the oil, and/or has some efficiency rating available.
I switched to the TRD (Toyota Racing Development) version--I believe it is a PTR43-00080 without looking up the number--or else I just use a WIX or Mobil 1 now.
Just my preference.

.

You had me intrigued there for a minute.

Does anyone have one of these foam filters around that they are willing to cut open? I'm curious to see what these look like on the inside myself, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

The foam filter that Toyota uses as a break-in filter from the factory, are available from McGeorge Toyota on the east coast. I inquired as to the availablity and they were $11 each in a case lot. There are pics somewhere here on BITOG from the distance past. Probably more expensive now as that was about 3 years ago.
