ive heard that the oem toyota filter is a very good filter? is this true? id like to do my own oil changes but i got the 5 yr maintenance plan at the dealer( i know the tech who will be doing all my work, very good tech) so i know theyll be using oem filters. are they good?

Conventional wisdom used be that the better Toyota filters had a foam filter rather than a paper element. Are the foam filters still available? I don't know, but a web search should tell you.

Toyota switched from their novel media to pleated paper in this neck of the woods about 7-8 years ago...and not making them in Japan (Thailand IIRC).

Did Toyota start using a cartridge filter instead of a spin-on with the 2011 model? If so, I'd stick with Toyota filters.

Recently my friend and I have been servicing a Lexus for a client. We've hacked open the toyota filter... It's well made. I still put a Hastings on it.. just as well made at a better price and easier availibility.

I can't speak for the 6 cylinder, but the 4 cylinder Tacoma still uses the same spin on. I believe the filter size/number is even the same as it was 20 years ago.

mobilaltima, I use the Denso-made Toyota filters on my sister's '08 RAV4 and my B-I-L's '09 Corolla because both cars are still under warranty and IMHO you can never go wrong using OEM stuff during the warranty period. If there's any failure, it puts the burden of proof back on them.

Those filters (90915-20004) are still available, but grey-market only.

Who knows if they are any better, they are certainly different. And expensive, approx. $16 each

I purchased the Japanese-made Toyota OEM filters via IH8MUD forum about 6 months ago for my Toyo Landcruiser. $10 each. Pretty cool foam media vs. paper-Denso filament.

Denso is always well-regarded. But finding the original foam-filter is tops, IMO.

I agree with the foam filterm but I ain't paying $16-17 plus shipping for them. I don't think they are THAT good.

Hi I used Fram oil filter/ Fram Air Filter for 3 years. I never had a problem.

Now I am using Toyota OEM Oil Filter, and OEM Denso Air Filter. I buy it online and get a good deal. OEM Air Filter Fit better.

Here's a crazy thought . Wonder if applying ice to the oil filter would help ? Such as a bag of ice . Wear gloves to help deal with frozen hands .

+1 . The TOYOTA ( Denso ) 90915-YZZF2 is a good filter . Like the way it's sealed with plastic and is lubricated . The U.O.A.s for both our cars showed good filtration . Can get for less than $4 each with tax .
