The truck's a '97 2500 with the Vortec 7400 and a 4L80E transmission. Driving down the road this afternoon, the odometer stopped working at 98,011 km. The trip meter doesn't work either. Any ideas? Not wanting to drive it further until I get this sorted. Thanks!

The odometer is probably not the costly part, its removing the instrument cluster and replacing it.

I think the odometer just did not want to go over 100,000 and it was getting close.

Why worry about it all that much. You can estimate when to change oil, etc.

Put iton your list of things to do as a B priority.

The odo is micro motor driven(no cable),try another cluster, very easy to change out! CL or flea bay has them cheap.

+1

I recently had problems with the odometer in my 2001 GMC van, and I got a new instrument cluster from the junkyard. Works fine. I think, but I'm not sure, that there are people who can correct the mileage on the electronic odo's to your current mileage. I wasn't worried about it in my application.

Incidentally, there are also people who can "repair" your odometer and other gauges, but in my case the cost was much more than just replacing the gauge cluster.

Interesting you posted this, as I spent part of the day last week fixing the trip meter in my 1993 Chevy truck.

The odometer and trip meter are powered by the same motor connected by a spring-loaded shaft so if the odometer dies, the trip meter will die as well, but not necessarily the other way around.

It's easy to take the instrument cluster out and then check the odometers gears. It's likely the gear is broken or stripped if the sending unit is operating properly.

I have not found a good source for any of the odometer or trip meter gears or individual parts, however so it will likely mean a new instrument cluster regardless.

FWIW you can find instructions online on how to change the new odometer to match the mileage of the old one.

I fixed a Saturn odometer with a part from odometergears.com. They list a 24-tooth gear for '97-'98 Suburbans, but don't seem to have instructions for repairing that model.
