your VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) is almost always on the transmission, so on a fwd car, it would be the front wheels.

Front wheels. You can confirm this by slipping the wheels on a slick surface, such as a snowy surface. As the wheels spin, the speedometer goes up, even though the car is not moving.

One some cars the speedo is connected to a left or right output shaft so when you spin a wheel the speedo either jumps to 0 or 150. Well, depending on how hard you're givin'er.

On a front wheel drive car, which wheels register the miles traveled to the odometer?

The car is Chevrolet Impala

The driving wheels. Odometer/Speedometer is registered off the transmission typically.
