My mower has been making some odd noises and so I thought I would look at the front wheel drive system. Pulled both front wheels and one of the wheel has what looks like BBs in 10% of the slots where the gear drives the wheel. Shinny steel. There is a cover shield that prevents stuff (grass) from getting in there (no grass present).
First thought would be a ball bearing failed and these are balls from the bearing. But I do not see any ball bearings. The wheel looks like a sleeve bearing and its intact.

I am thinking something got in there during manufacture.
