OCI recommendation

Hi I'm new to the site and just started reading up on oil. I'm wondering what oil and filter would you guys recommend for my two cars...thanks
1. 2000 Toyota Avalon, 5w30, Api Sm, live in newark delaware, mostly drive easy, daily drive is mostly short trips in city, currently no known problems with car, this will be my first oil change on this car as it was just purchased and not sure what the previous owner used, vehicle is under extended warranty which requires changes ~4000 miles.

2. 1998 Chevy blazer, 5w30, mostly drive hard, mainly highway with some city driving, no known problems, currently use Castrol gtx high mileage with a fram high mileage filter ~3000 miles, would like to extended changes out to about 7500 miles and switch over to synthetic.

You've got it backwards. Severe service is short trips, lots of stop and go, city driving. Easy service is long highway miles giving the oil time to get up to temp. and burn off any moisture and fuel contamination. In any case, this is pretty easy. I'd stick with whatever the extended warranty says on the Avalon until the warranty is over, than I'd probably go for a 6-month or 5,000 mile regimen. On the Blazer I'd stick with a high mileage oil like MaxLife and I bet you can easily go 6-7,500 miles or 6 months. I'd skip the Fram filters except for the Extended Guard, which is a good one, but quite pricey. The High Mileage filter has some sort of goo in it that is supposed to be time released, but most of us here on BITOG think it is snake oil at best and possibly harmful at worst.

The 2000 Toyota motor`s were sludge engines,I would pull a valve cover on that and see how it looks first. Then go to PP,or Mobil 1.

The 2000 Toyota motor`s were sludge engines,I would pull a valve cover on that and see how it looks first. Then go to PP,or Mobil 1.


Yup, this is one of the cars that is on Amsoil's sludge list. They recommend 5/severe and 7500/normal and I don't think I'd even bother with 7500.

Any severity in city driving is the mismatch of the odometer with the time in use. Yours appears to be not in that situation if I read it correctly. Yours is severe due to true short trip nature of usage. Either way, 4k might not be the right number. 4-6 months might be a better idea.

Skip the HM filter next time. If you want fancy in a Fram get the Extended Guard. Decent filter, but expensive. Go up to 6months on your oil of choice.
