So I’ve had a life change earlier this year where my commute changed drastically, almost from 1 extreme to the other. I was laid off in March and took a job much closer to home, so rather than the 140 mile round trip per day I now travel a grand total of 1 mile round trip a day……so 1/2 mile each way to work. I absolutely love it.

Previously I was running a 5k OCI which would equate to every 1.5 months to 2 months tops. I am now seeing that 5,000 miles will take me a lot longer to get to than I am willing to leave oil in the engine especially with the short trips. I am looking for ideas to modify the OCI to best benefit the vehicle. I do run it up to temp (oil temp stabilizes at 222°) and drive for 45 minutes to an hour a couple times a month.

Truck is a 2019 Ram 1500 5.7 liter. Current mileage is 103,765. Oil was last changed in Feb this year around 99,500 miles with SuperTech 5w30 and a Wix XP filter. I was going to go a year and then change but I’m getting fidgety.

heck if super tech is working for you, just change out at 3k oci ,providing the engine probably will not get up to temp fully to burn off excess moisture and by products stay with wix xp too.

That's like me 2 1/2 miles to and from work..I get 2 days off week .at least. One day ilk drive late afternoon around my city, stop n go bad...but I'll get about 30 miles over couple hours racked up..oil gets hot between 7-9 miles operating temperature
That's when it starts burning up water, unburned fuel out the tailpipe. Once week 24-30 mile run cleans the oil.
I'll be 3000 miles in 8 months.. oil jet black by then.

Take the vehicle out for an interstate run getting the oil up to temp for a 30 minute ride somewhere once every couple of weeks . New OCI should be 3,000 miles / 6 months . You will be hitting the 6th month OCI mark first to change the oil . Be sure to get the oil warmed up before changing to get out any residual contaminants . Lastly , you could probably use the same oil filter and change once every 12 months .

I already take it out at least 2x a month and run it at full oil temp for 45 mins to an hour. Probably going to change it next week and follow 6 month program from here on out. It is what I was thinking would be best.

At least consider a bicycle or walking on suitable days.

edit: This is respectfully offered as a suggestion.
Again no thanks. Not to sound like an AH, but where I live the humidity is way worse than the heat and we have these wonderful creatures called mosquitos that I would prefer not to have eating my behind alive. That coupled with the fact that when it’s quitting time and it’s raining I’m not trying to stay around because I rode a bike.

In a nutshell, I bought the truck, don’t own a bicycle and will use the mode of transportation that makes the most sense to me.

Seriously guys, I’ve weighed the odds of walking, bicycling etc. If any of those methods were feasible this would not even be a thread. I appreciate the suggestions but they were considered and frankly not what I am asking for here.

It's misspelled and I usually don't care. Rough morning i guess
So do you think 6 month intervals with Super Tech synthetic and Carquest Premium filters would be ideal or should I shorten to 3 months?

I’ll try to remember to post from a computer next time rather than my phone so I can spell check better.

I'd have no issues with 6 months especially since you take longer drives too.

Driving a vehicle more (eg using more fuel) to extend the life of the oil might not be a financially or live style sound option. One could spend the same amount if not more in fuel and time vs just changing the oil more often.

I am of the mindset you alter your oil change to suit your life. You don’t alter your life to suit your oil change.
