Going to do an OC on my Buick tomorrow. I got a 5QT jug of Pennzoil Ultra to try out and a new PureOne oil filter.

I got a new Pureone Air Filter to swap out the one that has been in for 15,000 miles. I have a feeling that it is going to be very very dirty. The Buick is driven primarily on dirt and country roads. I'm going to try and remember to get pictures to post on here after I'm done tomorrow.

Also got a pair of Puralator BreathEasy Cabin Filters to put in. I'm also going to try and get a pic of them to compared to the old ones.

I would change the air filter at least a week before the oil. Reasoning is that you will probably shake some dirt into the engine while doing the change (no matter how careful you are). If you give it a few days to get into the old oil you will not have as much abrasive dirt in the engine for a full OCI. Just my 2 cents.

BTW if you can post any pics that would be great!

Thanks! I never thought about that. I'll have to remember that for future changes.

Either 6,000 or whatever the OLM says

Here are some pictures from the change:

Oil was very very black. Only burned a 1/4 QT over the 7,000 miles. Used Castrol Edge 5W-30.

I tried to get some pictures of the fill hole:

I posted pictures of the Engine and Cabin filters: here

Ugh, I'd personally shorten my OCI to 5k for a few oil changes and use something like MMO for the last 500 miles each time, or even Kreen or an engine flush additive just before the change etc. Is this your car getting dirtier or is this interval cleaning things up compared to previous looks inside the filler hole?

Keep all of these type of photos and see if it gets any worse during this next OCI.

The filler hole and especially the oil don't look promising. I'd suspect potential for deposits at least based on seeing how black the oil is and how dirty the filler hole looks. Does the oil come out very runny oil does it slow down/look thick really fast after pulling the plug?

Anyone else?

It looks a lot better than before, It is at 81,000 miles. The last 2 changes I added MMO for the last 1000 miles. That's why I am switching to Ultra. I seen a thread on here before that a guy did short intervals with Ultra and had the pics showing how much it cleaned out.

Its not really thick or really runny, basically in between.

Once I got on this site I started taking care of the car. It is my mothers and she was taking it to those Valvoline Quick places. I got her switched over to synthetic and the car is running much better. I'm working on getting it cleaned out.

Also, ltslimjim: Did you look at the filters I took off? Here is the link.

I think since there is so much dirt and dust in our area for what the car is driven on also causes the oil to get black so fast.

Maybe I'll do 5,000 mile changes of Ultra and take pictures every time and see if it gets better.

Well, IMO that is the idea if you are doing a cleaning. You don't want to leave it in there for long or as long as your typical OCI. It's for the purpose of cleaning and getting it out within conventional types of mileage numbers. Nothing beyond 5k, IMO.

Yes, the excessive dirt would definitely blacken the oil faster if dirt was getting into your engine, that would be another reason to run shorter intervals.

I think your filters should be doing fine. I like that you are using a PureONE, it's what I use if I know the engine is probably on the dirty side as it filters efficiently without the price of an extended performance filter.

I've heard good things about Lubegard products, Kreen, MMO, and/or an 'at your OC' product like Amsoil's Engine/Trans flush. Hopefully you aren't at that point. I doubt you need those things. It wouldn't hurt, though.

It really depends, do you plan on staying with an oil like PU for life?

If it works out well, yes I'll probably keep using it.

In that case, just continue with this setup but hesitate to run beyond 5k for a couple changes, less if you think you might have deposits or anything beyond varnish happening.

In connection with that, use an additive of choice for the last 500-1,000 miles of each of the next two or three oil changes to help with cleaning at the end of the interval and make sure to let the oil drain for a few hours before reinstalling the plug/new filter.

I can't see inside the fill hole so i'll guess there is a little varnish, or discoloring. If your car is not turbo, try Mobil 5000. It will make the valve train look new again.

I'd really like to see under his car's valve cover after the new oil change.

It looks like he's got the GM 3400 in in the Buick. The fill hole doesn't look to bad. How did the oil cap underside look? White Mayo looking stuff? This engine has a history of Intake Gasket problems..Coolant leaking into the engine.

How's the coolant level????

Yeah it is the 3400. Nothing white on the back of the oil cap. Coolant level is fine. Had the system flushed last year and they just didn't fill it all the way back up to normal level. I need to get a gallon of Dex-Cool to add. The engine does run quite warm though...... always has even before the coolant flush.
