Observations so far with Mobil 1 Extended Performance

Posting this in case anyone has any confusion/questions about the new EP oils. So far I have about 1,400 miles on the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30. Oil is already darker then the 5w-20 was at the 5,000 mile mark or close to it. Consumption seems to have stopped (NOT POSITIVE OF THIS YET!).

We've also seen in the recent UOA that this oil does indeed get darker then the previous Mobil 1's. This is a good thing. More detergency. I saw the same thing with RL in my Corolla. Series 2k as well. Engine is extremely quiet and smooth. Seems to have become more smooth. I'm going to give this oil a chance and see what happens in a few more thousand miles.

An observation and a couple questions. OEM recommendation for the Honda 2004 Civic is 5w20. Is that different for the Accord? What convinced you to go to Mobil 1? Go to 10w30 EP?

The viscosity called for is a 5w-20. I want to run 10,000 mile drains. I realize that many of the new 5w20 conventionals are excellent and more then capable of 5,000 mile drains. However, I like the added detergency of the Mobil 1 Extended Performance. I chose 10w30 bc generally speaking, they are the less volatile and most shear stable in the Mobil 1 line up. Always has been. I'm going to see how this oil looks in about 6k miles or so and take it from their. Might not go right into a 10,000 mile drain at first.

I should add that 10w30's in most brands are more stable. I think it's a GF-3 Mobil 1 with more Boron and detergency. Mobil 1 has always been good at keep engines clean though in the past so it's hard to say.

So, I just bought some 5w30 Havoline conventional to change my wife's oil in her Explorer. Do you think I should take it back and swap it for some 10w30 for the summer??

I'm running the same thing in my 2001 Infiniti I30 as of last week. I'll run it for six or seven months, then do a used oil analysis and see how the lead looks versus my recent used oil analysis. My brother is running the 10W30 EP in his '96 Maxima over in central Illinois. I'll drop off a Blackstone kit in early July and get him to run a used oil analysis as well, probably after the same time interval. Similar engines, different driving habits and mileage.

The oil that darkened the quickest for me was the Mobil 1 5W40 I used in the '02 Saab 9-3. I'm talking less than 500 miles with a Pure One and it was dark.

Why are you switching from Mobil 1 5W30 to a conventional oil? From what I've learned at BITOG, if I'm gong to use a conventional, I'd use Pennzoil or Havoline (Chevron is tough to find around here).

I think you'd be okay with either weight, though I'd use 10W30 if I were in the great state of Texas.

The reason I'm switching from M1 to conventional is because my wife drives about 10 miles to work and back in traffic both ways..and that's about all the driving that SUV sees. Only on occasion does it see any other driving, with only a small amount of that highway. I had originally planned on running 7-8K OCI's with it, but after being on this forum for a little while, I realized that with her driving style, that might not be a good idea. And I would never pay the price for M1 and dump it at 3-4K..that's a big

lol.

The reason I run GC in my car is because it sees almost all highway miles..so I'm going to run the GC (or any other syn there after) until my OLM light tells me to change it. I'm hoping it will at least be 7K

Ive got about 750 miles on my fill of Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 in my 04 frontier and the oil hasent budged from the full mark yet and ive actually been very hard on it lately.
About 100 of those miles have been towing about 1000 pounds and i cant count how many times its been past 5000 on the tach, redline is 6500.
Milege on truck is close to 19k, the last 2 fills were SL Mobil 1 5w30 with some 15w50 thrown into the mix.

I'd like to see someone take 1-2 ounces of this Mobil 1, EP, pour it in a small Aluminum pie tin, and cook it on the grill over a low heat (with the cover up).

I'll bet you this darkening is strictly a chemical reaction and has NO relationship to the amount of detergency in the formulation.

Should be no problem with Memorial Day coming up. Golden opportunity while the significant other is getting the burgers and salad ready to go.

Gives you time to light the grill and roast a little M1.

I will vote for Buster to do it though, we ain't gonna grill.
