I have been using Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 in my 3.5L V6 Nissan for the past 3 years. Recently, I noticed it was consuming some oil, about 1/4 quart every 1000 mile or so. Today, I changed oil to Castrol Syntec 0w-30(GC). My first impression after this oil change is that Mobil 1 Extended Performance seems to run more smooth in this 3.5L V6. I plan to keep the GC in for a 5000mi run.

The GC is substantially thicker than the Mobil, so at cold start you may indeed be noticing smoother operation from the Mobil. Have you had any impressions after full warm up?
No need to change at 5k, even a budget syn will do that easily, you might as well get your money's worth and run it out longer whether you use Castrol or Mobil.

Its best to stick with what your motor call's For. the 3.5 has tons of problem's if your burning oil you may have a leak somewhere like most my customers have with there 3.5's GC is Wonderful Oil it can go up to 20K! but for a IV Synthetic your better off just Going With 10w30 EP Which is still thinner then 0w30.
I recently did the exact change you did..Mobil 1 Extended Performance to GC in a Nissan 3.5. No consumption with either oil. Both smooth running as well. Keep us updated on how your consumption goes.
I tried GC in my 3.5 VQ but changed to Mobil 1 0w40. Both were better than 5w30 for consumption but the Mobil 1 0w40 seems smoother to me also.

I took a picture of the leak. It's light yellow in color. Not sure if it's engine oil. This picture was taken from the driver side of car. It looks like coming from this greenish L shaped bar.
