Hello Gents,
I just moved to New Zealand and I need to get some oil and filters for my 90 454 flat tappet engine. where can I get oil ratings for this country?
The oil I have seen doesn't have a API rating.
Should I just use a cheap fleet (diesel) oil?
Thanks
Steve

Just use the cheap fleet diesel oil in a straight weight such as 30 or 40 wt....otherwise 15w40 is fine.

You wont be able to buy direct from DR Britton, they only sell to resellers (ie Repco & trade garages etc)
What part of NZ are you in? If you're in Auckland then there's a few speed shops that do parts for American cars. You'll probably freak at our prices though compared to back in the US
www.staparts.co.nz
www.segedins.com
www.bntnz.co.nz

Pick yourself up a copy of petrolhead mag as it's a great resource for parts etc

Ive never seen a jug of oil on a shelf in a major store without either an ACEA or API rating.

There is also Pioneer Autoparts in Onehunga for old V8 stuff. They sell Purolator filters.
BnT sells Redline as well as Fuchs
Repco, Supercheap, Appco, Partmaster are the large automotive chain stores to get major brands, Shell, Mobil, Castrol, Pennzoil
There is also Kmart.

Where are you looking to find an oil with no API rating? Oil in supermarkets here is cooking oil. Try Repco or Supercheap for a good range, BNT does Fuchs and Redline, I think Partmaster does Elf.

I can pretty well guarantee that you can get Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 probably anywhere, and it will do a pretty good job.

Super Cheap Auto's Calibre "diesel" 15w40 is Caltex Delo Gold Ultra, which has an "S" rating, and pretty high ash for $30.

Thanks for the replies, I'm in Christchurch.
All I seen for oil in the ads and in the stores is SN,SM no API
I usually use a CJ or CI oil.

Steve

Yep, good old Magnetec 10/40 should do a real good job if you don't want to use anything too expensive. You might want to look at the mail order situation for Castrol as the best source:

One online shop:

They also stock Valvoline 20/50 at a good price for the summer and I would not be overly concerned with Zinc content as it is more of a break in problem for flat tappet designs, or the premature wear is the result of using cheap rubbish parts from China or Mexico. Blackstones think it is something of a myth once the engine has been run in.

How about oil filters? What is a good brand over here?(NZ)
something with a anti drain back valve.
I was checking out the supercheap site, SCA or Ryco filters.
I'm gunna miss wix filters. LOL

90 454 chev
93 2.0 ford

We use Wix filters at work - you aren't look hard enough. Ryco are a good filter, used to be made here...now some rebranding happens. All the Wix and Ryco filters these days have a silicon ADV....the ones I fit do anyway.

No, just magnatec 10w-40. It's overpriced for what it is hence they spend lots on marketing it here, which dumbs down the consumers IMO. I'm not a fan of any 10w-40 TBH but I'm sure it has it's place
