NYSE Plans to move Chicago operations to Texas

The way I see it, there are 50 states and they are all great. I love CA, but I will tell you when I spent time in Arlington, TX everywhere I went people were kind and polite to this crazy Californian. Better than here. I was impressed. And gorgeous sundowns... I was just staring at the skies.
I loved CA when I lived there. The people were outstanding and more friendly by far than in IL, and even IA. We made great friends there.

I've floated the idea of a "Stay in Illinois" bonus on the State Pension System.

They should change it so that your earned benefit is half what the current pension amount is, and if you stay in Illinois you get the earned benefit amount plus a bonus of the equal amount. If you take up residence in another State, you lose that half of your pension.
If you're going to pull a stunt like that, it needs to be advertised as such and only applied to new hires. Don't attach strings to my money, my deferred compensation, that I've already earned.

Yeah - agreed - that's a gross breach of contract, and the union would sue, and the state would lose.

The only people "floating" those ideas are the inexperienced, the naïve, and, of course, politicians.

You don't get to change the terms of compensation after a contract has been entered into, and that would include pensions.

Meanwhile in Houston:

https://www.tmc.edu/news/2019/07/se...d-as-best-hospitals-by-u-s-news-world-report/

our world renowned Med Center keeps on growing and getting better. Wealthy people come from all across the USA and the globe to get the very best care and highest skilled physicians on the planet.
One of our managers from Canada asked for a transfer to Houston bcs he needed the Gretzky of doctors for his son … Talked to him last week …
It has happened and they are happy …

The Texas Medical Center (TMC) in Houston, Texas is the world's largest medical center. Here are some of its statistics:

  • Size: TMC covers over 2 square miles and has 50 million developed square feet

  • Hospitals: TMC has 61 institutions, including 21 hospitals

  • Patients: TMC sees over 10 million patients per year, including more than 750,000 ER visits and over 180,000 surgeries

  • Births: TMC delivers about 26,000 babies each year, which is about one baby every 20 minutes

  • Staff: TMC employs more than 106,000 people

  • Research: TMC is home to eight academic and research institutions

  • COVID-19 response: TMC collaborated with public health officials, businesses, and the media to help guide decisions during the pandemic

  • TMC3: TMC3 is a 37-acre research campus that's a joint venture between MD Anderson, UT Health, Texas A&M HSC, and TMC

Its one of, if not the best Med Center on the planet. Its staggering in size.

I never said there were no hospitals in Houston. I said that there are entire counties in Texas where there's no hospital in the county and in fact, there may not be one for 4 counties. I don't believe we have that problem in Illinois because we have safety net hospitals if there's nothing else.

Since Texas chose to have so many people with no insurance, they get freestanding ERs that don't help the uninsured, and they put all the hospitals in bankruptcy that are even at risk of being near uncompensated care. They chose to do this. So yes, if you're very rich in Texas you may get some healthcare.

The hospital failures are not only avoidable, they're basically being engineered and the problem is not stabilizing yet and won't until you need a city like Houston to have a hospital anywhere nearby.

I'm proud to live somewhere where people are generally decent enough to make sure this doesn't happen. It's a values thing.

I don't need to go to Texas to get healthcare. Illinois has some of the best hospitals in the country and a strong framework in place to protect the rights and dignity of the patients.

Texans, and this is my general observation of them, consider the American flag to be a flag of convenience. They want everything that this country has to offer them including the single market and a strong currency, but at the same time they consider themselves to be Americans only if they're getting their way and when they hit a speed bump in that department, they suddenly talk of "leaving", and it just goes back and forth, and it's ridiculous. And Illinoisans consider ourselves Americans first and foremost and don't abandon the principles of our great nation when it falls on dark times.

This behavior of acting like they've collected a "scalp" with the stock exchange just really goes to demonstrate my point. It's just not terribly helpful.

Texas is a big ass state ….

Almost 900 miles on interstate 10 to cross it east to west…

Here in Virginia hardly any counties have their own hospital…. And Virginia is way way smaller than Texas…

And you ignore the fact many, many, individuals from other places flood hospitals which caused the issues there. .

And there is the federal law that requires ER to treat people.

Would that include the business that makes SpaceX rocket parts land on people's homes and cars for miles in the flight path when they explode?
Or the business that makes the Cybertruck, and the ability to drive into a light pole on a clear morning all while the owner tweets on X asking if they need crash data?

Yeah, we are just 12k and have a hospital - you will have to drive a whopping 10 miles to the next - and 20-30 miles later you start to have many others …

Aka NYSE got a bigger deal in Texas. A lot of big companies are moving main office out of downtown Chicago and into the suburbs like Oak Brook and Naperthrill anyways. That along with it being easier to get a business loan to build or own your own building versus getting a loan to redo a floor on an existing office building.

IL is still trying to support a lot of legacy department companies. Sears, Macy's, etc....alot of corruption between officials, companies, and unions.

Data centers have been opening though. Considering we have the largest amount of nuclear power in the states.
WOW, I just looked up your state stats. You do hold the crown for most nuclear power by a huge margin.
I thought SC was at the top of the list, in a way it is but as a percentage of its population (2010 stats had SC at 27% of its power was nuclear) , not in megawatts. Too bad they messed up bad with the boondoggle of a mess building two new plants. The data center media lately has moved SC state to explore somehow starting up construction on the two bankrupt failed nuclear plants again.
This is the biggest mistake America has made, putting off construction of these plants, while China is building them at breakneck speed
We know the data centers are going to go where the power is. Though some companies, are now creating their own.

I live within 15 minutes of two of them. As far as I know, two of them are in the process of shutting down (including the one closest to me) and the rest have luckily been refurbed. Fukushima really killed the want for Nukes. Not sure where Chicago is going to get their electricity-only heating from afterwards.

A few years ago ComED sent out a letter showing renewable-only rates; they were 1000% more.

That's funny in a sad way. Until we just moved to our new home. We lived within 15 miles of our operating nuclear plant and they were building two more on the same property for about 8 years ... sadly... it become a disaster and never was close to becoming completed. I was so proud of South Carolina and the whole project. I used to ride my motorcycle past it... oh well... another fiasco, not all South Carolinas fault. Westinghouse/Toshiba caused the problem. However the a the time, South Carolina Electric and Gas Top Management felt the need to cover it up, I think maybe even criminal level as they tried to keep the project alive. Now there is no more South Carolina Electric and Gas. Bought up by Dominion. SC could have been attractive to tech companies ... I would think.

Now, they are looking to maybe restarting it.

I had neighbors who moved into my community, people who were to run and train staff. They too, out of jobs and had to move away after a few short years.
