NY EZ-Pass toll violation

We have had 2 similar situations happen to me or my wife. In our instances, these were out of state tickets/violations for vehicles we've NEVER OWNED!...but the license plate number somehow matched. Plus, these were license plate numbers from years ago and we hadn't had on our own vehicles in many years.

In each instance, we went to our local NYS DMV and they searched our license plate number and to which vehicle they were registered to. The DMV gave us a letter(on their letterhead & signed/dated) in which we mailed to the agency/state authority.

In both cases, we never heard from those agencies again.

As I get older, one thing I do is make sure NO ONE can say I owe them money.

Document everything.
Call NY EZ-Pass and explain the situation.
Most likely that will be the end of it.

DO NOT IGNORE THE FINE.

What is the chance the next time you renew your License, that your own State will not renew
because of money owed to NY ? ? ?

What is the chance if the Police pull you over for speeding (in your State) and see
NY has a complaint against you for unpaid fine, What would they do ? ? ?

Some here will say I worry to much, but I like to stack the deck in my favor, especially
if it only costs a phone call.

I'm with you on this one-as Big Brother's reach for extra $ grows longer & longer, forgotten out-of-state stuff like this will show up in unlikely places-like credit reports, etc., which affects car insurance rates, loan approvals, whatever they can think of.

Guess what are they getting.

Be prepared....the 407 is a private company that has a rich history of stopping at nothing to get their money. If you do stiff them...if that plate is seen in Ontario again by any police officer (and he runs it) you will get stopped and charged, as toll evasion is a Highway Traffic Act (specifically the 407 Act) offense. Most likely the 407 will turn it over to a collection agency in the US somewhere and they will hound you. The 407 is a real ruthless bunch of A Holes and crooks. How else do you explain a 76 cents PER MILE toll!

It was built by taxpayers and then sold for a song to a foreign company. Now we are getting skewered.
They were warned yet it fell on deaf ears.

Well this was a lot easier than anticipated, I called in and they said the plate was misread and cleared the violation.

You got off easy...I got shaken down for "running" a Mass Pike toll. I didn't-I had my EZ Pass, but the scanner didn't read it. They "graciously" reduced the charge from $190(!) to $50.

They also told me that it was my fault because I did not have the EZ Pass mounted properly. They did not, however, explain how I could do so on a motorcycle.
