It's an acquired taste.

Chivas Royal Salute is another really expensive scotch.
Maybe because it is 21 years old.

It runs around $180 for 4/5 of a quart or .7 liters.
Or $7.20 per 1 ounce shot.

Macallan is pretty much acknowledged as the best according to my Brother in law. He travels to Scotland periodically and does the pub thing there.

I have very little taste for the stuff and can't tell the difference in a lot of cases. But agaion my Brother-in-Law buys Famous Grouse as his normal Scotch.

The thing is you can drink Scotch all night and not get a headache. I can drink a beer or a glass of wine and next morning have a headache.

I have drunk maybe 12-14 ounces of scotch in say 6 hours and wake up next day no problem..no headache..no nothing. :) Its amazing.

I Agree. Now a good bourbon, or Canadan Club, that's another story.

Do you have Och in Oz? I thought that your disdain for Scotch may be a distinction of some "subject" origin. I recall some Monty Python skit where some evil alien invaders were turning (alleged) normal Brits into Scotsman.

We are getting a bit off topic here but I feel that I perhaps need to point out that British does not mean English. British is English, Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish. Now here is the problem; some of the people in Wales, Scotland and Ireland do not apparantly want to be British ~ so that is a current problem.
Not wanting to get into politics I just wanted to point out that English is English and not necessarily British. St George's day is April 23 for those that might want to know!
To come back onto topic ... Scottish Whisky is one of their best exports but not only their best, they have many more. Unfortunately they do have some really bad ones such as BLIAR and GORDON McBROON who have, as Mark C pointed out, invaded England!

Scotts are welcome down here.

Where my parents grew up, they have the biggest "highland" gathering outside Scotland. Here in town is a pipe band, and an annual scotts ball.

I'm sure that they are ...even if they're 3 generations removed from Scotland. What I wanted to know is if there is a Oz distilled spirit that makes Scotch "taste like petrol" and if it's due to some competitive "noblesque" notion that promotes this pride in such a product if it exists.

Went to a Macallens tasting last week.
We got a 7 year old as we went in.
Then a 10 year old, and a 12 year old.
Evening finished with a 13 year old--and waiter appeared at the other side of the table and gave us another 13 year old.
As we left, we got a couple of glasses and a 50 ml bottle of the 12 year old.

And of course, there were hors d'ouvres on the side.

All in all, well worth going to. And, yes, I'll probably pick up a bottle next time I go shopping. The 12 year old from the sherry casks was unique and very good.

There's a fairly huge one in North Carolina as well, at Grandfather Mountain.
Picture, if you can, thousands of rednecks in kilts, tossing telephone poles around.
