After initially telling us she wanted to get a Mini Cooper or a Protege, she has now fallen in love with this green 2001 Golf 4 door hatchback at a local dealer, so it looks like she's going there tomorrow with my dad to put in an offer for it.

I asked if it might be the 1.8T model, but my dad says he doesn't remember seeing that badge on the back (did they even make the 1.8T back then?)

I'm curious if the base 2.0 engine in the 2001 is one of the oil burners?

Now if she gets this I won't be able to do the 5w20 testing.

I'm not sure what oil to run in it though. Maybe I'll give the 5w40 Syntec a whirl in it. She only drives 4-5k per year so I'll just do once a year oil changes.

I had an '85 Golf with the 1.8L variant of this engine. I don't know what has changed on this engine since then but the one had, I ran the snot out of it and it didn't miss a beat for over 150K miles when I traded it in. It didn't like thin oils either. Quickly sheared out 5w30 dinos would produce only a few lbs. oil pressure at idle when it was hot.

Pat, get her that GTO that we have been talking about. That way you can drive it when ou get the itch, and still have your Vette

4-door MK IV Golfs only come with a 2.0L gas engine (no badge on the back) or 1.9L TDI. Only the 2-goor GTIs come with either the 1.8T or VR6. Your mom is most probably getting the 2.0L 4-cyl.

My dad used to have a 2000 Jetta with the 2.0L engine and it burned oil like crazy. We used dino 15W-40 diesel oil in it and it still burned about 1L per 2000KM. A synthetic 5W-40 might be a good choice if the engine doesn't burn too much oil.

Very few 4 doors came with the 1.8t and it wasn't for all model years. While being a big VW fan I'm not a fan of either the 2.0L (SLUG) or the 1.8t. Get her a GTI with a VR6 in it

Most likely it's an oil burning 8V 2.0l with 115hp.

My dad and her went there at lunch and bought it. They got $1000 for her 94 Probe GT, which had almost 140k on it. The Golf was owned by a 65 year old lady and according to my dad the car looks like brand new, even the engine is super clean. It has 77,000 km on it, but drives like new. The lady took it to this same VW dealer for all it's maintenance since new, and apparently was very picky about doing everything listed in the book. I'm sure it got 5000km oil changes.

It is the 2.0 engine, but I don't think it's an oil burner, since the lady did buy a new VW from this dealer. Chances are that if she had a lemon 2.0 that burned oil, she wouldn't buy another VW.

I have now decided to run Schaeffer 5w30 blend in it, since I've got almost two full cases of it. I'll probably just use Purolator oil filters on it, since they now sell them at Walmart here. If the PureONE isn't much more $$$, I'll use that, otherwise I'll go with the Premium Plus.

Hopefully I'll have my own car purchasing story this week, I'm getting tired of not being able to find any 97-99 C5s in my price range.

(although at the same time, my search has only been going since June 17)

FYI, my g/f's 2001 Jetta has that 2.0 engine, and it doesn't seem to be burning any oil between its 5K mile OCIs. She takes it to the dealer for the oil changes, but I'm not sure what oil they use. I once saw a Quaker State sticker they put on her windshield with 5w-30 written on it, so I'm assuming that's what they use.

Patman, why not use the OEM VW filters? They're not that expensive if you can find them online. And even if you have to pick them up from the VW dealer - it'll just be one filter per year from what you're describing.

I figure that even though it would only be once a year oil changes, it's a hassle to go to the VW dealer to buy them as opposed to Walmart. Ordering online would cost a fortune unless the company was in Canada.

My mom brought the car over today and I took it for a drive, it's really nice! I never liked VWs all that much, but this one drives much nicer than our 2000 Civic! Way more torque too.

In looking through the owner's manual, I see they specify 5w40 oil. I wonder if the VW dealer uses that though? Probably not. The previous owner stuck to 5000 to 6000 mile oil changes.

So now I won't be using Schaeffer 5w30, but instead I'll use GC. I was going to try Syntec 5w40, but then figured I might as well go with GC since I've got over 50L of it here, so why should I go out and spend over $8 per liter for a different oil when GC will work perfectly? (I always do my mom's oil changes for free for her since my parents are always helping us out financially)

My g/f's 98 Beetle has the 2.0L. Nice little motor! It likes 15w-40 Delo and burns just a little oil (1/2 qrt over 3000 miles) but will stand up to anything. This is the car that went 33,000 miles without an oil change and is still running at 98,000 miles!

BTW - she drives the he!! out of that car (75 - 90mph on major hwys) and hasn't put a dime into it.

I'm hopefull that this one isn't an oil burner. I do know the first oil change was done at 5000 miles, so the break in oil was drained exactly as VW recommends.
