Not All KTM 790/890/901 Cams are junk!

Upon returning from a 5,140 mile cross country trip I decided to go ahead and check the valve clearances and Cams the on the CF Moto built 24’ KTM 790 Adventure for the second time since I’ve owned it.

I checked them at 12,700 miles and the bike currently has 20,700 or so miles. The remaining factory warranty runs out in about a month so I wanted to peek at the cams again given the reputation of the platform.

All the valves were once again in spec! The cams also still look great with no wear and only light running marks on the lobes.

Bike has been ran on Amsoil 15w50 Metric mostly. When out west Both times I changed the oil before returning with Mobil 1 20w50 V-Twin. Intervals are 2k miles when local, 3K miles when traveling.

Bike is still a joy to ride! I’m going to put a new Chain, Sprockets, Rear Tire and probably preemptively change the wheel bearings and keep rolling the miles on the bike.

This is my first KTM coming from Yamahas and I fully expected to have “issues” but the bike has been exceptionally reliable for me. I’m starting to get partial…🙄

Do these need to be checked that often or were you just paranoid?

Regardless, their cam issues will obviously not hit everyone, it seems you got a good one.

Factory interval is 18,600 miles. I checked them early last year before a big trip. When I returned from this trip I checked them again as the bike runs out of factory warranty in a month so I figured I’d see how they look.

It takes me about 45 minutes to get it apart. 30 minutes to do the check and about 1.5 hrs to reassemble so it’s not a big deal to check them.

I’ll likely recheck them in another 10-12k miles.

I wouldn’t say paranoid, rather curious. I also do mostly longer multi-day rides so I tend to over maintain on purpose.
