Hammonasett State Park, Madison CT on New Year's Day. This is Long Island Sound, not open Atlantic Ocean; CT installed a wave breaker about 20,000 years ago known as Long Island. Parking not a problem that day.

From Wikipedia

The park began with the purchase of 499 acres in 1919.[5] The park drew over 75,000 visitors in 1920, its first year of operation, a figure that grew to nearly 450,000 by its fifth year of operation, 1924.[6] In 2013, Hammonasset accounted for over one-quarter of statewide park attendance and over one-third of the revenue generated statewide by the state park system.[7] Officials estimate annual attendance at one million visitors.[3]

The park closed during World War II when the site became a U.S. Army reservation and active aircraft firing range. In 1955, a stone breakwater was built at the Meigs Point end of the park.[3]

An interesting side story; the entrance fee used to be $10 / car. During the most recent state budget shortfall, the legislature decided that park entrance fees should be subject to the state sales tax (6.36%) Seems getting 1,000,000 people in and out of the park yearly was greatly hampered by the gate officer making change rather than just "grabbing the Hamilton" After the uproar, a fee was tacked onto car registrations and the sales tax eliminated and CT cars can now enter state parks for free, year round.

I went up north To Fort Bragg in Mendocino County over New Year's. I visited with friends and the Mini got the Chandelier Tree initiation for safe future travels. I won't stick all the pictures in one post because that will be unsightly and inconvenient for those with slow connections.

I left on the 31st going north on 101. My first stop was In-N-Out for a double double burger for lunch. Yes, V3 occasionally eats trash!

From 101, north of Santa Rosa, I could see snow-topped mountains.

30 minutes before Leggett, I'm seeing more snow just next to 101.

In Leggett, the rite of tree passage for the Mini. The Chandelier tree is a 2,400-year-old redwood tree.

A view of the whole tree. It's shorter than advertised and only about 276 feet tall.

Trolling through the woods. When it's not freezing this is a great spot for a picnic.

A chicken karaage box was my dinner in Fort Bragg.

The next morning it was quite cold and I was glad I had replaced the battery before my excursion.

I saw this nice Buick parked in town and then Indiana Jones got in and drove off. If you look close you can see him wearing his leather jacket and fedora.

I was off to Glass Beach in Fort Bragg. The locals began dumping glass waste onto the beach/into the ocean beginning around 1906 and ending in 1967. Over the course of decades the broken glass was ground down into pebble-like pieces. Collecting is illegal. From trash to treasure.

Then I went to see the old Pudding Creek Trestle.

The order of images below is messed up. The Mendocino State park image should be the second image. EDIT doesn't show the links so I cant edit the order easily.

Got some real dinosaur-based fuel!

Went north on 1 for a while and then tuned back.

Today, I went to Mendocino Headlands State Park.

Next, I stopped at Bowling Ball Beach.

I had a cup of coffee before heading back home.
