I have a '14 VW Passat 1.8L Turbo and run Castrol 0w40. I am on my second oci since I bought it and noticed it consumes about 1/5 of a quart of oil by the 5,000 mile mark. 95% of my driving is highway mileage and this car is my first experience with a Turbo. I was curious if that is a normal amount of oil consumption at that mileage.

You're wondering if 1 quart of oil in 25,000 miles is normal?

No, it's not normal. It should probably be consuming more.

I cant argue with that I guess

I consider myself semi-competent in regards to cars, but I'm on a learning curve with my first European model.

1/5th of the way down between the full and add lines. It's a little less than 1/4 quart down. They call this "visual interpolation," something we were taught back in the grade school.

6.4 oz per 5,000 miles? That's not usage of any concern.

Man the amount of people that would give their left nut for that level! You've got nothing to worry about. Wait till it's "Check the gas, fill the oil" and then worry. LOL. How many miles do you have on it? Just curious.

Such a low oil consumption seems a tad unlikely, It's much more likely that the engine is a serious oil burner but the level on the dipstick has not gone down due to bad fuel contamination.
VW are well known for designing engines that fool their owners into thinking all is well until the owner joins this forum and discovers the truth.

I'm sure if you go and see your mental health specialist he will prescribe a long oil analysis course to restore your brain to normality!

Again, you're full of it. Do you believe the B.S. you post here?

His '14 1.8t is not an oil burner, nor will it have fuel dilution issues.

OP: your engine is fine and it's consumption is well within allowable limits.

Less than 1/2 quart every 10k OCI... I wouldn't even bother topping up.

I think you didn't pickup on the sarcasm and irony in the post.

RELAX!

There is no "normal" oil consumption...typical yes, normal no...some burn more, some less.
The same engine in different cars will burn oil at different rates...it's the nature of machines...and a reflection of different driving conditions and types of driving.

Anyone asking such a question after less then 1/4 drop on the dip-stick after 5k miles had better be prepared for disappointment when the level changes over time...disappointment or resignation and acceptance.

My 2005 Tacoma V6 has been averaging oil use at the rate of ~50,000 miles per quart. Running Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic.

And how sad that truly is. My factory remanned 12.7L Detroit Diesel S60 engine, 630,000 miles into it's second life, uses about 2 qt in 25,000 miles. Make me wonder what is going on in the R&D and production sections of modern auto/pickup OEM's that some stupid thing like 1 qt in even 2000 miles is considered "normal". Ever get the feeling that we are going backwards instead of forwards?
