noob oil filter and ADV question

I'm under the impression that a anti-drainback valve on an oil filter prevents oil from flowwing out of the oil filter and back into the sump due to gravity. Would an ADV be useful for a vertically mounted filter (spin on side facing up)? Wouldn't gravity hold all the oil in the filter already?

In some cases, it seems some of the oil can be siphoned back to the sump even when the filter is mounted with the open end up. An ADBV will help prevent this.

In theory, the oil trapped above the filter after shutdown, can bleed down into the filter and move oil back into the pan, but the filter itself will still be full of oil (think of a trap underneath a sink). The real problem is that it can wash contaminant off the dirty side of the filter and back into the pan. I say in theory, because the filters I use on my camaro, don't have an ADBV, and there is allways oil above the filter when I remove it.
