Oils are always a compromise of this and that; differnt manufacturere use different approaches, even within their own brands at times.
Actions speak louder than words. All the major makers (Shell, Mobil, Castrol, etc) claim less wear with CJ-4 over the predecessors, and have data to prove it, and millions of miles of testing.
I personally could not care less that CJ-4 has less of something than CI-4; I care about UOA and teardown analysis. Here the data clearly favors CJ-4s.
Not that using an older revision will hurt. Some of it depends upon your type fuel used. But that is only going to affect your TBN retention, and if you change oil often enough, even that is moot.
Bottom line; use any diesel rated oil that meets your engine specs and you'll be fine. We bitog'ers often debate the innane subtleties of stuff that matters not in the real world.
