Might be buying a 2006 duramax without all of that emission garbage like the new trucks.....can I buy a non CJ-4 oil?.or are the diesel oil nowadays all CJ-4?

There is really no non CJ-4 Diesel Motor Oil in the market anyone. You will be fine purchasing CJ-4 for the 2006 Duramax Engine. You most certainly can find non-CJ-4 oils still in the market place; look at any farm supply store for one source.
I, too, have a 2006 Dmax; you can use anything from CH-4 on up, as I recall. That being said, I don't really see the reason to avoid CJ-4 lubes. They are very capable, and have proven themselve time and time again by now.

i agree with dnewton, all of the cj-4 used oil analysis i have seen look very good.
with saying that i am still running ci-4 in my '07 powerstroke, my local deere dealer has alot of the 10w30 in stock.
if thats what you want to run it can be had, but as time elaspes it will become harder to come by, especially with ck-4 around the corner

Nothing wrong with a CJ oil,it does lack some additives a CI oil has but none the less it's fine and will protect well.
but on a side note i too love CI oil's and would rather use that.

Oils are always a compromise of this and that; differnt manufacturere use different approaches, even within their own brands at times.
Actions speak louder than words. All the major makers (Shell, Mobil, Castrol, etc) claim less wear with CJ-4 over the predecessors, and have data to prove it, and millions of miles of testing.
I personally could not care less that CJ-4 has less of something than CI-4; I care about UOA and teardown analysis. Here the data clearly favors CJ-4s.
Not that using an older revision will hurt. Some of it depends upon your type fuel used. But that is only going to affect your TBN retention, and if you change oil often enough, even that is moot.
Bottom line; use any diesel rated oil that meets your engine specs and you'll be fine. We bitog'ers often debate the innane subtleties of stuff that matters not in the real world.
