My father-in-law needs new tires for his '16 Renegade Trailhawk. We have 225-65-17 which was one size up from factory. What he "needs" is something like CrossContact LX25, CC2, AS3 or similar but he won't be happy with the look. In his head it needs the aggressive sidewall look. He is basically all around town, very little highway, hasn't taken it off road.
Current tires - Falken Wildpeak AT Trail. They wore evenly and have stayed quiet but only have just over 30k in 3.75 years. They are at 3/32" and have a lot of tread weather cracking and onto sidewalls. It sat at dealer for 9 months with them waiting for a motor. Not opposed to getting new ones as he really liked the look of the 3D sidewall. They were acceptable in dry/wet/light snow when I drove it a couple times. He won't get winter. Not my money.
Previous - Pirelli Scorpion AT - wore just as fast as the Falken's but also very poor odd wear and got very noisy. I won't do them again.
OEM was Falken Wildpeak HT - they wore very fast but evenly and stayed quiet. Look like street tires with a bit more open tread. He doesn't want that.
The Nokian Outpost APT at local dealer is $189 each out the door, tax included.
The Cooper is $198 each out the door, tax included.
Based on reviews I found they are both pretty close. I think the Cooper has the definite edge in the looks department. Nokian has 2 different sidewalls but even the more aggressive side is not like the Cooper or AT Trails. Both are 65k rating. Nokian is 27lbs, Cooper is 30lbs. Both 3PMSF. Both are non directional so can cross rotate to help even wear and potential noise.
Any other opinions or experience with noise, balancing?
I did read the the thread on initial impressions. Cooper Road+Trail
