Nokian Outpost APT or Cooper Discoverer Road + Trail for '16 Renegade Trailhawk?

My father-in-law needs new tires for his '16 Renegade Trailhawk. We have 225-65-17 which was one size up from factory. What he "needs" is something like CrossContact LX25, CC2, AS3 or similar but he won't be happy with the look. In his head it needs the aggressive sidewall look. He is basically all around town, very little highway, hasn't taken it off road.

Current tires - Falken Wildpeak AT Trail. They wore evenly and have stayed quiet but only have just over 30k in 3.75 years. They are at 3/32" and have a lot of tread weather cracking and onto sidewalls. It sat at dealer for 9 months with them waiting for a motor. Not opposed to getting new ones as he really liked the look of the 3D sidewall. They were acceptable in dry/wet/light snow when I drove it a couple times. He won't get winter. Not my money.

Previous - Pirelli Scorpion AT - wore just as fast as the Falken's but also very poor odd wear and got very noisy. I won't do them again.

OEM was Falken Wildpeak HT - they wore very fast but evenly and stayed quiet. Look like street tires with a bit more open tread. He doesn't want that.

The Nokian Outpost APT at local dealer is $189 each out the door, tax included.
The Cooper is $198 each out the door, tax included.

Based on reviews I found they are both pretty close. I think the Cooper has the definite edge in the looks department. Nokian has 2 different sidewalls but even the more aggressive side is not like the Cooper or AT Trails. Both are 65k rating. Nokian is 27lbs, Cooper is 30lbs. Both 3PMSF. Both are non directional so can cross rotate to help even wear and potential noise.

Any other opinions or experience with noise, balancing?

I did read the the thread on initial impressions. Cooper Road+Trail

Continental Terrain Contact AT. Best wet performance.
doesn't come in 225-65-17 and I can't go any bigger without hitting. Crosscontact ATR only choice and not 3PMSF.

He's basically speed limit all around town and to his lady friends house and back. Not daily higher speed highways, pushing turns or other.

Also keeping his original spare in the spare well. Date code is 4415 but only use it has seen was to help when rotating in the driveway. It was on today while I had nail puncture plugged on one of his worn ones. 2nd flat on different tires in 2 weeks. No dirt, no cracks on tire or rim.

I'll take that chance if needed around town. It's also the original 215-65-17 size.

I ran 225/65/17 Toyo Open Country AT3s on my 19 Renegade TH. Very light weight tire (no performance or MPG impact), 3PMSF rated, quiet, and looked great imo. Did great off road too for what the Rene could do (water was its achilles heal, 3 PTUs in 27k, that's why I traded in for a JL Wrangler). Liked them enough to run them on my KJ and JL. They run very smooth too, always have had great luck with Toyos and Nittos.

If he likes the aggressive sidewall look, would he go for KO3s?
My pick for mostly highway is Hankook AT2.
Both have 15/32 tread depth, are puncture resistant and will last forever.

Why go with a horrid wet performance, substantial weight increase in city driving? I bet you those KO2's and 3's are responsible for half of CVT failures in Subarus.
Cooper has a really good reviews and is very good in wet.

x2. the renegades struggle enough hauling themselves around, you don't need to make it worse. the 2.4 tiger shark already burns enough oil, don't need heavy tires to make it even worse

KO3s have improved syping over KO2s which will help their wet and snow traction.
Two other options are the Yokohama AT4s and the Toyo AT3.
Both have snow flake symbol rubber and 16/32” tread depth.

Outpost APT or Firestone Destination AT2 or Yokohama GEOLANDAR CV 4S

Lightest weight, 3PMS rated, and have the "aggressive" sidewall look.
Pretty sure all the other recommendations in this thread are heavier weight (worse city MPG).

Why are K03s even being talked about? I don't see them in the OP's required size

The Cooper Discoverer® AT3 4S is available in a smaller 215/65r17 size, at 31 lbs.

AT2 weigh 25.6 lbs. CV 4S 27.1 lb. APT 29.8 lb. (OP check your APT weight spec)

I'd go with best price of the three.

From what I have read, it is still one of the worst performers. I don’t think siping is their problem. Summer performance tires don’t have siping but they are excellent in wet. It is compound.
But, regardless, why going such a heavy tire for city crawler? It will add at best 3lbs if not 7-8lbs of unsprung weight. It will use more gas, accelerate worse, brake worse and put additional strain on transmission, bearings and suspension.

If you have half an inch of clearance 225/75R17s are an option.
The Firestone Winter Force looks like an awesome winter and rain tire, but doesn’t have an aggressive sidewall.
The Hankook AT2 would be a good all round tire with the look you’re after.

I had looked on the Discount Tires site for the weight. He likes the looks of the Coopers and the TR tests and reviews look pretty good as well as BITOG. They also have a $70 rebate through 5/31. The Falken's he has show at 30lbs so will be the same.

Again he doesn't off road just wants the look. My job is to keep the 79 year old man happy while actually trying to meet the needs of how he drives and not go crazy on budget.

The 215's look very small after upsizing. When I put the spare on to aid in rotations it's noticeable. @userfriendly 225-65-17 is max without rubbing from all the forums. The KO2's I saw on some looked good but also 40lbs and load range D. It rides crappy enough as is.

First picture is factory 215-65-17 Falken Wildpeak HT.
Second picture 225-65-17 Pirelli Scorpion AT.

Get him Coopers. TR has test with them in. They have very good wet performance, they look cool. Just go for it.

Need to get the Renegade washed up when rain stops and maybe some tire shine for a better picture. 225-65-17 Cooper Road + Trail AT.

He's very happy with the look. I didn't notice any issues on the 5 mile ride home around town. First opinion I'd say they were softer on the bumps and crappy pothole patches. I might have to take it to work for the 50 mile round trip experience.
