No wonder our fuel is so expensive.

I’m a semi mechanic for a fleet. From what I’ve heard, a Pete will cost more upfront and use a little more fuel than a semi a fleet like say Swift would use, but the resale on a used Pete 389 is much better than a used fleet Freightliner Cascadia. The Pete is still more costly at the end, but not as bad as you’d think.

That owner takes care of his equipment. Buying new is more expensive than taking pride in the equipment. Also that has nothing to do with the cost of fuel.

Virginia has exactly the same 28 cents/gallon tax as South Carolina does, yet I paid $3.07/gallon for 87 at Costco yesterday.

Pretty much everything in Virginia costs more than it should. I figure that's the price you pay for living a state where 8 Presidents were born. Gotta pay for the amenities that make Virginia a great place to live.
One misconception at times is the total tax bill per gallon. 28 cents is the state tax. There are all kinds of taxes on gasoline including county taxes, taxes on the equipment and storage facilities. The 28 cents is just the tip of the iceberg. But VA isnt too far off, though still operating a vehicle there is still more expensive, registration fees, inspection fees. (there are no inspections in SC)

Gosh, I LOVE South Carolina, this small state, not only last of the free but land of increasing manufacturing growth on an incredible scale, low taxes is key.
Born, raised, 4 decades on Long Island NY moving out of there was the best thing ever.

Here are some tax numbers -
Chart doesnt include federal taxes and still doesnt show complete cost that the second chart shows- For example some say its close to $20 in gas taxes to fill a 20 gallon tank in California and according the oil industry the costs are higher due to refinery restrictions.

and here is the more realistic cost ... still doesnt include costs and taxes on other gasoline infrastructure though the raise prices in states but you can get the idea by the chart. You can also click the provided link.

Personal property tax too. It's one of the ways that Virginia can appear to be a low-tax state because most people only look at the real estate tax, not realizing that there's also a personal property tax on vehicles. It can amount to a couple thousand a year or more if you have a new vehicle.

YES! Good point, we have personal property taxes in SC too, the problem with documenting them is each county has their own tax rate. Where I live now my personal property taxes are around $1,100 a year for our modest two cars, boat and motorcycle.
However, when I quote my friends on Long Island on property taxes I do include that number. I just tell them they are under $4000 a year on a 3000 sq ft home. My actual tax on the house is only $2,000 (actually less now that I retired) But I build in another 2k.
With that said I live in the second highest taxed county in the state other counties much lower. Either way on Long Island with our SC house, we would be looking at least $20,000 in property taxes there.
Interesting about VA, NC where we are moving has a vehicle tax too and I am going to have to get my cars, bike and boat trailer inspected which annoys the heck out of me but whatever. My NC personal property tax will be a fraction of my high taxed SC county though.
Some northern states also have personal property taxes. Such as CT.
(in case you dont know, we sold our SC home after 15 years Nov 2022, now in a holding pattern apartment until our NC home is completed in March) Because of all the media about the horrible housing market and the fact that the house in NC was to be competed at the end of Jan, we put our SC house on the market in Mid Oct, thinking it might take a month to sell as we priced it at the highest ever in our community. We put the house on the market Friday afternoon by Monday afternoon 3 days later we were in contract and had to be out in less than 4 weeks. So much for the soft real estate market in the east!
Multiple offers and still sold at slightly higher than asking. I know VA is much the same and NC too.

In Colorado one of if not the only refinery on the front range had a little fire right before Christmas. It's supposed to go back online soon.

Live in California and you’ll see why Chris142 is whining
I live in Chicagoland so it's almost as bad and with lower wages. I could say a lot more but I've followed enough over the 10 plus years to know it won't go over very well.
