Yup. Some manufacturers have been doing this for years.

BMW realised that not all of their automobile owners care enough to do a spare tire change by themselves (either call a garage, a tow truck, get Arnold lookalike to help on a roadside replacement, etc.) so in the end: they too, did away (weight and space savings) with spare repair kit instead of a doughnut or a full spare.
Glad that in my case: wifey's 04 camry still has a full-size spare in the trunk. Guess whose doing the spare tire change?!

What kind of cars are we talking about that doesn't have a spare? Both of my Fords still have the donut spare.

My Focus still has a doughnut spare. Though I wonder how much gas it would save to take it out.
I wonder if they have given genuine thought about building large tricycles.
The rear single wheel steers, while the front 2 are the drive wheels.
The British built a jet powered tricycle that broke the land speed record of Mach 1. It beat the American version by a few days from what I remember.
So it is plausible. 3 tires would save them a lot of time.

Nothing you'd notice. Halfway through the winter I added two 60-lb sand bags to my trunk in the Cobalt and didn't notice a difference in gas mileage. The spare weighs maybe 15 lbs.

Even though it has been years since I've used a spare I'm not sure I'd want to go without one. At least they are still optional on many of these cars.
IN the new honda Fits spare tire IS an option item. along with cargo cover . YuP great for a hatchback, what's next passenger side mirrors at extra cost? Dont forget Heater/winter package with rear defrost don't really need in texas or hawaii. long winded rant!

In my Z4 I don't have a spare so I bought a full size wheel which now takes most of the trunk.
In my wife's A6 we have a full size spare that comes with a TPMS as well. My guess is because it's Quattro that's supposed to be in adverse driving environments.

Spares at the wreckers are quite cheap, so I guess in theory you end up saving some money when the manufacturer pushes the base price lower.
I find for highway driving, when doing some coasting, adding weight really extends the distance I get off of a hill. Sometimes I'll have 300lbs of feed in the Neon and it probably helps more than it hurts mileage.

My '11 5er has run-flats and no place in the trunk for a spare (nothing under the "deck" of the trunk). Also, the manufacturer is short on the 19" run-flats so you might wait 3 days to get one by courier wherever it fails. I'll think twice before taking this car on a vacation until I get some non-run flats that can be sourced anywhere.

The Pontiac Grand Prix, 2004-2008, didn't have a spare in the GPX versions. Supercharged or V-8.
