Whenever I check the oil in my car, or add washer fluid, I'll get at least one person who will come out of their deck, give me a dirty look, and go back inside.

Had a similar rule at my townhouse, I believe the exact wording of the rule was "no auto repairs that could cause fluids to be released to the ground.", so no oil changes, painting, etc. I was on the rules committee and remember that someone was expecially concerned about people painting their cars on the property.

Anyway, one day I was out in the driveway replacing the alternator on my S-15 Jimmy. Very simple job as the thing was at the top of the engine. Sure enough, "Mrs. Kravitz" from the next building wandered over and started to tell me about the rule and how she was going to call the management company. I politely informed her that a) the rule states no repairs that allow fluids to be released, and if she can show me where I'm violating that rule, I'll drink whatever she finds, and b) I helped to write the rule, so I know for a fact I'm not violating it.

One of those priceless moments.

My 2006 Saab 93 has a low oil warning indication. So does my 1988 Mustang GT, although the sensor on the Mustang doesn't work anymore, or it's not hooked up, or there's a relay that's missing, or something. I don't need it so I haven't spent the time to figure out what's wrong with it.

Teach him how to check the oil. Many people simply don't understand hows and whys. Many people can't learn by watching or even listening to others, and must experience things first-person. Next time you see him, ask him to follow your instructions, and give him one lesson on how to do it. Don't touch anything yourself. Make sure he does everything himself, and learns. He might not even like opening the hood, or might not know how to undo the little latch thingy.
