interesting story about oil ignorance.

so my buddy got a brand new hyundai elantra. he brings it over for its first oil change. i told him i have some 10w30 he can have.

when we go to fill the car up, he check the owner manual for the right oil viscosity. he says we need to use 20w50 after reading the manual.
ok that is all fine and dandy but i do not have any 20w50. the closest thing i have to that is 15w40 and straight 40.

so i tell him he will be fine using 15w40 but he says he wants somthing thicker so he choses straight 40.
now at this point i am a bit concerned about putting sae 40 into hyundai with only 3300 miles on the clock. but rather than get into an arguement over it i let him grab 4 quarts of sae 40 and fill it up.
we start the car up and the low oil pressure light goes out in 3 seconds.
keep in mind this is just after an oil change so the pressure should take longer tham normal right?
i turned the car off and then started it again and the oil pressure light went off while the engine was still cranking.

so anyways, i am wondering what you guys think about this. i dont really know what to think.
i know it will void the warranty but that does not really matter. the warranty was already void because we dont have an oil change reciept.
and i dont think this guy cares about a warranty anyways.

First off, I am sure he misread the manual ..secondly I don't feel it matters too much that he is using a 40 weight ..might cost 1 MPG or so ..ask him to let you see the manual ..bet it say 5w30 or 10w30 .

But hey who am I to critisize him I have been using 15w 40 for thew last year ..prior to that always was 5w30

When I change out any of my vehicles...02 Accord, '90 Cutlass or 01 F150, I always have the low oil pressure light come on for about 3 to 5 seconds during first crank. Wouldn't sweat it at all, perfectly normal. In fact, when I first changed my F150, I put 5 quarts in it and then cranked. Light stayed on for about 15 seconds when I cranked it, freaked me out. Then luckily later I found out that it takes 6 quarts... thank God I didn't drive it back to Oklahoma like that.

The warranty is not void b/c you don't have an oil change receipt. If you don't have a receipt of oil & filter purchase, then that would make it more difficult.

I am not sure you need any reciept for warranty purpose. A mechanic can tell if your car was run with no/low oil, the inside of the engine does not lie.

He has definately read that manual wrong. Mine says 10w30

also, i do not know if he read the manual right or wrong. all i know is that after reading the manual he says he wants to use 20w50, maybe he chose to ignore the manual.

well my friend was over tonight and the car sounded normal. no problems. i thought a sae 0 might be a bit thick upon cold startup but it does not appear so.

In warm weather the oil pumps fine. Next oil change go to a multi visc.

Might want to be careful.. i have a 1999 Hyundai Tiburon FX, it has a older version 2.0 litre than the new Elantra's.. my oil light never goes on. on my manual.. it saids 10w30 or 5w30..... i don't know about single wieghts.

ok i finally got a look at his manual.

it says you can use anything from 10w30 to 10w50.

hes changing the oil again at my house. this time with mobil 1 15w50.
