Does Mercedes no longer compete in the mid and low end wagons ever since they sold Chrysler? Does Mercedes still own any other lower end brands? I browsed mbusa.com and apparently they have gotten rid of all their wagons (type T) but have a "crossover" listed under "SUV and crossovers" that appears like a large wagon; but it costs over 50K US. So, no compact wagons, and no low-mid end wagons or hatchbacks? Their C class sedans start
around 30K, so I guess that is their only mid end offering.

The unions gave made it tough for MB to hang on to Chrysler. Maybe if wouldn't be bad for them to take over another brand to turn into a lower end brand--Saab? Especially if they can do so at a good cost.

Here we go again...

YOU DO KNOW THAT IN GERMANY MB HAS VERY STRONG UNIONS AND THEY HAVE AGREEMENTS WITH MB.

The reasons why MB dumped Chrysler has nothing to do with the UAW in America or the unions in Germany. MB just believed the benefits they received from the takeover of Chrysler were not useful anymore so they dumped them.

Nobody really competes in the low-mid range wagon market anymore. GM cheap, small, mid-size, full-size like Cavalier or Caprice- long gone. Buy a Caddy CTS wagon. Ford? Zilch since the Taurus wagon went bye-bye in the mid-2000's. Chrysler had the Magnum which seemed like a good seller. I really don't know why they axed it. Mazda, Toyota, Honda neither. Jump on an Acura TSX wagon while you can because I'm sure it won't be around long either. Americans just don't really care for wagons and automakers can't justify their low sales numbers.

I bet a lot of people aren't even aware of some models that had wagon versions because of how few were sold. When's the last time you saw a Jag X-type wagon? Or a Lexus IS300 wagon? Yes, they were actually produced.

A friend of mine just bought a 2004 MB E320 wagon. Nice car, and it wasn't that expensive ($14k) given what it cost new.

Not sure what the definition of "low-mid range wagon" is, but as far as wagons, there is Jetta Sportwagen, Volvo XC70, A4 Avant, 3-series Wagon, Outback...

The lack of a good wagon from MB has been a problem since the 300TDT was discontinued in 1985. We never got a midline diesel wagon again. It is sorely missed.

If we got a nice E-class TD Id buy one tomorrow. Everything since has been for the show of vanity versus smart operation.

Do you feel that way about the W210 wagons of the late '90's early 2000's? I'll admit, I don't know much about Mercedes at all, but just based on the purchase price and the size, they look pretty attractive in the used market. It's one of the few full-size wagons available, new or used. Is it really a piece of junk?

It's funny you mention that...I saw a TSX wagon for the first time the other day when I was driving home. I remember it distinctly because it was so odd to see a new wagon. It really stood out to me. I think modern wagons look good, certainly better than the crossover SUVs that took their place, but the buying public at large doesn't seem to think so.

I was pointing out the absence of low to mid priced wagons outside of European manufacturers and regular "players", like Subaru. I should've made that more clear.

"piece of junk" isnt a good representation. My father has a w210 diesel, and it has 23x k miles on it and runs great, gives 36 MPG and is as smooth as can be. Has needed glowplugs (a wear item) and a new AC compressor, as well as some front-end parts, but what car with that mileage does not?

His has had rust issues, which have been repaired but may come back. No better than w123 cars in that regard, maybe worse, perhaps as rust prone as w116s!!!

But the issue is that you cannot get a w210, or even a w124 wagon in diesel form. I love the w211, a used 211 diesel sedan will likely be my next MB purchase. Alas, no diesel wagon there either.

So the last time there was a good diesel wagon in the USA was the w123. A nice one will still cost $20k!

I think that as a sturdy wagon, an MB would be a wonderful car. Alas, if Im going to get a ga$$er, I might as well get a 530i or xi wagon, which I can get with MT.

If Honda sold an accord wagon (as opposed to or in addition to the TSX (Accord Euro) wagon), I think it would be great. Not that the subaru is a bad option, but a 4 cyl MT FWD with a bit more focus for fuel economy would be nice!

Wagons have not been popular in the USA for a long time. That is because many people associate them with the cars their parents owned. Wagons just don't sell enough in the USA to make it work.

There was a Nissan Maxima wagon up until 1988. They were not common.
There was a Nissan Sentra wagon until around 1990. They were not common
There was a Toyota Camry wagon until 1996. They were not common.
There was a Toyota Corolla wagon until the mid 1990s. They were not common.
There was a Buick Roadmaster wagon until 1996. They were fairly common, but apparently not common enough for Buick to introduce another wagon to replace it.
The Lexus IS300 had an optional wagon for about 3 years, but was eliminated when the IS250 and IS350 were introduced.
There was an Accord wagon up until 1997. They were not common.
The Dodge Magnum was popular for a little while, but then it came to an end.
The Saturn S-series had a wagon from 1992 to around 2000, they were not common.
The Ford Focus had a wagon version up until around 2005. They were not common.
The Hyundai Excel had a wagon version, but when Hyundai got rid of the Excel, they didn't bring in another wagon with the replacement.

Wagons get offered often, but they don't sell well enough to sustain their sales.

Many people have bought vans or SUVs instead of wagons.

Elantra Touring is pretty close to a wagon.

I'm sorry...
I forgot about that one.

It still doesn't have impressive sales.

MB dumped Chrysler because it was a horrible POS. Great dumping ground for their old technology though.

As for wagons I don't think they are importing any right now, the C and E class are Mercedes mid and low end offerings.

Mercedes has a low end brand, its called the A class.

Good find!!! Wow. Too bad my wife does not like w124s much.

its at $9400 right now, reserve not met. I wasnt aware of this car!

I did find the following:

That said, this particular model is quite rare, only about 1500 were ever imported to the USA... And, it was the last diesel wagon Mercedes ever imported to the USA, and the only W124 diesel wagon imported to the USA.

What a car! not entirely immaculate though, looks like it was run into something - the bumper protector on the rear has a pinch mark. To replace it means rubber wont match. That to me is a $3k boo-boo. Also looks like it has a bit of blowby judging by the residue around the breather. By this point in engine development they should have sealed better. Indicates to me that perhaps the wrong oil was used, or not changed enough. I dont see all original records.
Im pretty picky though...

??? Nice, original, problem free diesel MB wagons from 82-85 will sell for 22-25k routinely in good shape.

Ill bet the reserve on that one was at least $17k.

Ummm...why are they worth so much? They're 25+ year old cars all said and done.
