No homage to Monty Python at the Olympics?

of course not, don't you know the Olympics are a serious affair?

I mean they COULD have @least signed off with
"and now for something completely Different..."

What?

Eric Idle singing "Always look on the bright side of life" wasn't Python-esque enough?

He even kept the original lyrics, and they "bleeped" him out...

I like his comment about those people from an old British colony looking rather annoying, over all that's funny.

I'm way behind on my TV viewing...

In fact, I just finished watching the Beijing Olympics.

We can finally free up space on that DVR.

How do you get a DVR to last that long. I think the longest we get is the 2+ years we've had our uVerse DVR

our HR-20 DirecTV DVR from 2007 is working fine. If the hard disk ever dies, I'm replacing it with a 1TB disk rather than trading in the DVR because the possibility of DirecTV giving us a refurb HR-21/22 model is too high. I like this one

And, for those not seeing the bit of sarcasm, the 2008 Olympics was not on that DVR.

I think we had an R15 and we had three of them over the course of two years.

We've had the same HD DVR with uVerse for the past 30+ months now. OK, end of threadjack

I was hoping to see one of the "Top Gear" presenters in the motorcade of old MG convertibles etc in the closing ceremony.

I did see more than one car with its lights off... Lucas?

i'd be lying if i didn't say there wasn't a small part of me that was hoping the stig would be the one to light the flame @ the opening ceremonies. (or @least driven that speedboat instead of Beckham)

Yes, the Flying Circus crew IS definitely the height of British humor, even more so than Benny Hill (which I also enjoy a lot, especially "Hill's Angels", Louise English in her prime in particular

), and MUCH MORE SO than Mr. Bean, but they are not quite as 'family/kiddy friendly' as the latter.

"The Holy Grail" is one of the most hysterical movies I've ever seen!! MANY memorable lines/scenes from that one.

No Monty Python because no one would understand it.

My girlfriend bought me the complete DVD set for Christmas a few years ago.

I watched the first three DVD's and I was like this:

Some of their early stuff still has me baffled.

He wasn't Beeped out here.

But really, the tribute to British music was for the most part, the British music of 30+ years ago. It could even been called 'a tribute to Dead British Musicians'!
Or in the case of the Spice Girls, Musicians we wish had.....

Even Eric Idle's skit seemed to pay homage to Britain's 'Confused' identity, as he awkwardly tries to dance to East Indian Music.
As a Brit myself, I saw a country that has lost/is looking for an identity, while hanging on, living in the past.

Do you blame this on their 'melting pot', accepting, and inclusionary attitudes of late, or something else?

To my mind, it's hard to say. Probably not One or Two things but many.
There were/have been many changes in the U.K. since the war, Break down of the Class system, change in economic base, Baby Boomers coming of age and aging, Joining the EEC. as well as the influx of immigrants from various cultures into a predominantly White, Protestant society.

Not all has been bad, but it remains to see how it all plays out.
