No filter wrench, filter removal: Ford 5.4L

I've had to use a hammer and a screw driver in a situation where I didnt have access to a oil filter wrench,was not fun and was messy also.

It's another reason why I like K&N oil filters,they have the 1-inch nut on the bottom,so the oil filter is easy to remove when it's time to change oil.

Except it wasn't the grip that was the issue

I had no problem gripping the can. It was getting the leverage on it, as dnewton pointed out, citing his experience with the same vehicle

My son has a newer Chevy Malibu with the 4 cyl in it and the cartage filter has a hex on the end. Problem is you need a special wrench or socket to use the hex. Stupid Government Motors.

I used the metal band wrenches for years and then my Honda Accord came along. It had one of those PITA filter locations - horizontal, on the back of the engine. Changing brands of oil filters made it hard to always have the right cap style socket on hand. I used some el-cheapo wool-looking gloves with rubber dots all over them. They would give me enough grip to loosen the filter. I also like the oil filter "plier" type wrench as well.

The plier-type wrench also doubles nicely for removing the large plastic nuts that secure the fill tube to the toilet tank.

If you can fit a longer/larger oil filter on your vehicle, that will give you more filter to grab and maybe help a little taking it off.

On xmas day I did my first OC on the Civic that was bought a few months ago - needed a breaker bar to get the drain plug off and a filter wrench for the filter. I always hate changing oil after someone else did the work! Hand-tight and I've never had a problem. I swear when wrenching the filter off, it was turned at least 1.5 times after gasket seating!!!
