They are full of cow patties. The compressor breathes the same air we do - mostly nitrogen.

Had several sets of nitrogen filled tires from Costco. I can tell zero difference. They loose pressure as fast as air and I still have to adjust pressure for winter vs. summer. Yawn. For free (okay, not costing extra) I'm cool with it, but if I had to pay, nuts to nitrogen!

Some say nitrogen leaks out slower,but it appears to me that N2 molecules are smaller than O2 molecules so should leak faster.

For the geeks here (I'm guilty), PV=nRT - which says air pressure changes with temp the same as nitrogen! (R is R, it doesn't change from gas to gas!) It's left to the reader to determine for themselves if air/nitrogen in tires follow ideal gas law - I'll say yah, close 'nuff, this ain't rocket science and I've been a rocket scientist...

Theoretically, pure nitrogen won't degrade the rubber as fast as air, especially at high pressure and temps - this is why the space shuttle and military aviation tires are nitrogen filled. I think commercial aviation uses nitrogen too, but my experience is limited to Army aviation and the shuttle program.

In practice in a car tire sees such less extreme service than aviation tires. Tires wear from the outside in, not inside out! Use air and spend the $30 on Amsoil!

For phucks sake. The 22% that isn't nitrogen is what leaks out. Who here can check their tires using air that doesn't lose 1 psi in 4 months? Answer none of you. Also why do all race cars and aircraft use nitrogen? The intelligence quota on this board is dropping dramatically. The ex BITOGER's on Noria might actually be right after all.
 
Fine then sprintman grab a textbook, and teach us.

A day that I haven't learned something is a day wasted IMO, and I'm willing to learn how and why Nitrogen leaks less than air, and defies the ideal gas equation...particularly against it's neighbour element on the periodic table.

Please educate me.

Only time we've used them in race bikes has been in tires that have problems with heat. They still have problems, but they can be lessened...a little.

Does one need it for a street car? Well, I don't use in my race bike tires, I'm not using it in the wife's car.

If what you say is true, then the 20% of the air in the tires that is oxygen will leak out first, so after a few cycles of leak down refills with air, the stuff in the tires will be nearly all N2.

That makes it a self correcting problem, except for one problem, the problem is so small that for all practical purposes the problem doesn't exist.

How about a year?

Consumer reports inflated 31 pairs of tires - one with air, the other with nitrogen. They stored them outside for 12 months.

The tires inflated with air averaged 3.5 psi loss and the ones filled with nitrogen averaged 2.2 psi. This is about a 30 % improvement. Interestingly this is surprisingly close to the value predicted by Ellwood, Baldwin and Bauer when they did a computer model of permeation.

BTW, this info was just presented at the Tire Industry Conference at Clemson University held March 12 to 14th. The papers haven't yet been published, but I have access to some of the unpublished drafts - and this is excerpted from one of them.

BTW I think you will find the racecars use nitrogen because it is dry and you get a more consistent pressure build up without water going from liquid to vapor. But us poor amateur racers never see the nitrogen bottle - good old fashion compressed air is all I ever saw - and it worked just fine.

Also, I'll bet aircraft use nitrogen because of the high pressures used. It's a whole lot easier to fill a tire with 300 psi using a 3000 psi bottle.

Water based - 2 reasons

1) It's available where the tire mounter is - paste isn't.

2) I think it does a better job. I can see if I lubed everything. Then when I'm done, it evaporates.

I can not say this strongly enough:

NEVER DRY MOUNT A TIRE!!

1) The beads have been known to tear when they "flop" over the rim flange. (How's that for a technical term!!). This opens the casing to high pressure and a separation will develop.

2) The beads have been known to "hang up" (Another highly descriptive technical term!!) on the safety humps and if enough pressure is applied, the beads could break. People have been killed as a result.

Always use lube and plenty of it when mounting a tire. Use it on the tire beads, on the flat of the rim (the safety hump area), and the top rim flange (where the bead "flops" over) - (Man, I am just killing myself with all this technical jargon.)

Capri, as usual you gave very good information.

Part of the reason for my question is a veiled way to show the fallacy of people being anal over introducing shop air that has moisture into a tire when there is already much moisture from the act of mounting the tire. I don't know of a way to properly mount a tire without leaving water inside the tire. The moisture in shop air pales when compared to the amount left over from mounting. Using dry nitrogen may reduce the dew point inside the tire by a few degrees, but there's still plenty of moisture inside the tire to corrode the rim or do other horrible things that people purport. I suppose the anal tire mounter would be prudent to exchange the air in the tire once a day for a few times, and end up with a drier tire than using dry nitrogen once as tire places do.

Are you trying to say "intelligence quotient"?

Anyhow, race cars use N2 to keep moisture from air out, and have more consistent pressure at the high temps they run. Aircraft and space shuttle use it so a tire is not a source for oxygen in a fire. And who here checks their tires only every four months? Waste your money if you want to...

I used to work in a aircraft wheel and brake shop, and we had to commit this AD to memory, always had FAA inspectors coming around. we filled wheels w/ nirogen from a tank. we did a leak test, then would take a reading, and an hour later do it again. I forget what the tolerances were, but it was tight. an AA A-300 main wheel IIRC took 345psi, took about 20min, maybe more, I forget, to fill.
anyway, as the AD states, the only reason for nitrogen was to prevent the danger of explosion. the other purported benefits for passenger car use are theory at best (meaning, if nitrogen is 'bigger' than oxygen, then they 'must' leak out slower, right?)
 
Also it's 100% pure bottled nitrogen. Tire place who did my new BMW tires talked about getting a machine soon to get nitrogen from the air. I'll be sticking with the bottled variety at my local tire dealer.
 
This is a very interesting and informative thread. Next time I take my Space Shuttle out for a few orbits, I will definately consider pure nitrogen for the tires. Thanks all.
 
I always wondered why nobody used argon for tire fill. It's going to be even less reactive than nitrogen and comes in the same type bottles off the same truck.

Anybody know why noone uses argon? What is the price difference between the two?
