Nitrogen Tire Fill

How 'bout sulfur hexafluoride, it's a big molecule and it's own leak detection gas. Or may be better yet...mercaptans (what they put in propane so you can smell a leak).

We have liquid argon and nitrogen at work; I'll have to buy a thermos.

Not the Costco near me, they said you have to buy the tires from them before they would give any N2.
 
The tires on the hot new Nissan GT-R comes factory filled with nitrogen.255/40ZR20 97y fronts and 285/35ZR20 100Y Bridgestone Potenza REO70R on the rear.

I would say it's at least as good , maybe even drier .

We use a lot of SF6 gas at work . VERY expensive .

Give it a try, see if it works well. What is this gas used for?
 
It's a registered product down here, as it's not too friendly to the Ozone layer.

Haven't stopped it's manufacture and use, but we need to maintain a register.
 
I had to use a full size spare that I had kept from the last tire change. It was a Michelin Harmony tire with 84,000 miles on it. It had contained nitrogen from new and stored outside in a shed. The pressure was still acceptable and showed very little nitrogen loss. I was not expecting that. It went from 35# down to only 28# in over a year.
 
That's over 1/2 psi per month. Good, but not not remarkable.

My car doesn't lose that much pressure and it's tires are filled with plain old air.

It was actually a 16 month time period, that ought to change the pressure loss figure a bit.
 
Are the benefits real , or just tire dealer hype ? What I'm saying is , does the average driver actually realize any of these claims , or are we all just caught up in the newest gee-whiz fad ?

Theory is one thing , but is it the real deal ?

Either oxygen leaks out faster than nitrorgen or it doesn't.

If O2 does leak out faster, since there is only 20% oxygen in air, the tire will soon only contain N2. For free.

If O2 doesn't leak out significantly faster the N2 then the N2 claims are used male bovine food.

Either way, the N2 peddlers are scam artists and the N2 buyers are suckers.

Are people really that gullible?

I'd like to reduce my ignorance ... that looks like they say higher temperature with lower pressure ... what are we looking at here, temperature after operation if the pressure is lower? Or asked another way, what is cavity temperature?


This is a slide from a presentation given to the California Air Resources Board by ExxonMobil. They were addressing the issue of nitrogen inflation as the board had been told by the manufacturers of nitrogen generators that there were all these wonderful benefits to using nitrogen. Needless to say, the board wanted to require the use of any technology that would improve the air quality (or reduce the carbon footprint).

There's not a lot of info on what exactly they are reporting, but an educated guess would be they measured the temperature inside the air chamber of the tire while it was operated on a test wheel at a given speed and a given load.

What should have been passed on to the board is that the claim that tires run cooler with nitrogen is refuted and that pressure - something within the control of the vehicle operator - is the main driver. Other slides in the presentation deal with other aspects of tires operated with nitrogen. Point by point, every claim was refuted (except tire aging and tire wear - both of which weren't addressed.) Tire aging is still under investigation, but the results seem to point to a slight improvment. There is no reason to believe that tire wear would change if none of the measureable properties is changed.
