Nissan Rogue 1.5 VC-TURBO Engine Teardown

It was interesting seeing inside one finally. I just wonder if it is worth the complexity/weight. Nissan must think so. Seems like it would be perfectly suited for use with forced induction the way they're using it.

2021 Nissan Rogue FWD with the 2.5L NA 4cyl gets 30MPG combined while the same car with the 1.5L Turbo 3cyl gets 33MPG combined. The 2.5L has 181hp/181tq while the 1.5L has 201hp/225tq.

Yes that VC-turbo engines is very innovative and actually a cool design. Whoever came up with it really did something different and interesting. BUT I imagine that despite losing a cylinder it costs WAY more to make than the old 2.5L four-banger. That's like double the amount of parts!

I don't get why they didn't just go for a 1.5L turbo-four like GM did. I know any TGDI engine isn't really "simple" but compared to the VC-turbo it really seems like it would cost less to make, be more reliable, and deliver pretty much the same power and fuel economy.

And in my experience, 3 cylinder engines are loud. Vibrations can be adressed but the noise from some is fun for about 5 minutes....

From my understanding GM has done well in this and the Trax's little 1.2L is super smooth for what it is. So it really just depends on the engine and I don't think you can make a blanket statement that 3 cylinder engines will have unacceptable NVH.

Apparently all the variable compression parts make the engine fairly smooth and quiet. Seems quite a complex motor to put in lower priced Nissans.

Yeah, that's what surprises me the most... the cost of parts on this thing must be pretty high compared to a four cylinder engine without the variable compression. I can't imagine the 25% reduction in block size due to one less cylinder saves them much?

I said, in my experience, and I've experienced 3 cylinder engines for the better part of 20 years now. They don't vibrate much due to balancer shafts but all have had induction noise up the wazoo but not the performance to match. Combine that with almost always a very wide open throttle during accelleration, even with minimul gas pedal input and I fnd it tiring. how smooth is a 1.2 4cyl in comparison? In my experience, night and day.

I have experience with VW, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Hyundai 3 cylinders. All loud, some vibrate. It doesn't help if they get put in cheap cars with minimal sound proofing. I just ordered an MG with GM 1.5l ecotec tgdi. If that was a 3cyl I wouldn't have.
