Nissan Recall for Potential VC-Turbo Engine Failure

Those VC engines are often (maybe always?) mated with a CVT. What could possibly go wrong?

That and I don't see the point of a VC engine with a turbo. I know it's not the same, but I would think it's more of an either or situation not both. They are only tripling down in unreliability. Not to mention that the Rogue is overpriced for what it is.
Yeah I didn't quite understand the need either. Just use valve timing to bleed off pressure?

Now that I think about it, I wonder if it's to lower compression if knock is detected? I believe that sometimes very rich mixtures are used to cool things down, under WOT, which leads to more emissions and less mpg. Well, if you are going to lose power due to preignition, why not drop compression instead? Maybe this scheme allows them yet another knob to twist. Optimize pressure in the cylinder at all times.

[But when you go down a path and no one follows you... maybe it was the wrong path?]

Pure guess on my part.

Buyers tend to get drawn to the ~2017+ Pathfinder due to the 7000lb tow rating Nissan has given them. Lots of people max them out and ironically, you never hear of a CVT failure when towing. Problem is, 2017 to current are still using the sludge prone VQ35DD. 2021+ Have a ZF 8spd as opposed to the CVT which I'd imagine is an upgrade.

I've seen a few tear down videos of those VC turbo Nissan engines. Interesting to say the least..

Isn't it the 9 speed unit?

Of course we don't know the full story on the life that 2.0L tear down engine lived, but I found it curious how nasty looking the backs of those intake valves looked considering these engines use GDI and port injection.

Saw it coming. Look what we can do! Look what we shouldn't do!

Nissan takes out personal ad, "Please consider partner with us; like long walks on beach, later nice ocean side patio dinner then quiet night by the gas logs fireplace ... Oops! didn't make it home!
Like long walks on the beach ... "

Eh, fuhgeddaboudit

Hey, guess what... I Do Cars is tearing one down. Haven't watched it, but will post it here. 2L version.
I like Eric and watch his videos often, but speedkar99 - the guy that uses an old toothbrush as a pointer -seems to have advanced engineer/builder level smarts and often gives a thorough and plausible explanation of components and design.
A minus would be he does teardowns outside his house - many in bad weather.

For some reason speedkar99 hasn't been in my youtube recommendations lately--I should go search that out, I do recalling liking his vids too.

Question: The wife has a Infiniti QX50 that is in the recall (she received a notice in the mail). Not sure how the recall will play out, but either way, she loves the car and wants to keep it long term. Given that GM has advised people to use 10W30 instead of 0W30 in the 5.3/6.2 fiasco, I am thinking that perhaps the 0W20 engine oil might be part of Nissan's issue. So my question is: would a thicker motor oil help with this issue?
