after copping flak for not recording oil filter dimensions on my SCA deconstruction a few months ago...

Oil change on my Nissan, so decided to deconstruct the filter.

Nissan OEM cartridge type filter...New filter and O-Ring pictured next to the canister before installation.

Filter and canister installed. Nissan were nice enough to have a 1/2" drive in the canister to enable on/off filter changes.

Old filter drained down for a while.

Chopped up...plastic frame, glued felt end caps (end caps don't seem to be a "bypass" filer as opined previously, too much glue. Plastic frame doesn't get glue, the element and end caps do that.

The felt end caps seal over a spigot in the filter housing, as well as a similar spigot in the filter adaptor.

Bypass functions are performed by the filter adaptor.

15 months, 10,000km, and filter was intact, had one visible white metal flake...always get 1 per oil change.

Filter media unrolled to 1.7m long, 95mm wide.

Interesting. Looks like the replacement filter element has the plastic cage (like an Ecore). Most of the cartridge designs I've seen have a metal cage in the cartridge housing, and the element slides over that.

Yep, it's horizontal.

There's a hole in the filter adapter that sits over a tundish with a drain pipe dropping off it. Turn the filter canister, and the holes line up, draining the filter into the tundish, which then empties...over the swaybar.

Good amount of media ... ~250 sq-in.

Local oxy welding outlet is a Castrol agent...the Magnatec SP 5W-40 is a "professional" product, so only available in 20s and 205L containers. I've bought a few off them, but when they hit $180 for 20 litres, I switched to buying Mobil 3000 in 5 litres, and only having a couple of litres inventory left over.

It's a pretty drum. My other Magnatec drum is just white with a sticker. My Delvac 1 "drum" is a plastic pail. My used oil gets dumped into another 20L (mobil kero IIRC), and I've got a shell Kero drum as well for other stuff.

Can buy Delo 400, Delo Silver, Valvoline, etc. in 20 litre drums reasonably easily around here.

What kind of engine does that Nissan have in it? In the USA, I have never seen a Nissan engine that uses a cartridge filter.

Is it a diesel? Nissan hasn't sold a diesel car or pickup truck in the USA since the 1980s, either because people didn't like them, or because they couldn't pass tougher smog tests, I don't remember which.
