Nissan Altima is #1 Midsize Car in America

Looks like it only took 12 years for the country to catch up with my tastes!

On a sad note, my wife's '99 Altima GXe got hit in a parking lot hit-and-run, yesterday, by a truck. It did quite a number on the fender and bumper cover, and popped out the right side lamps. $1,727 of damage (estimate).

There are a lot of cameras around the hospital, so I hope the City Police can catch the guy.

A good reputation for being turds. Anything 01 - older was pure junk, 02-03 altimas are/were ticking time bombs with the qr25, and even up till 06 they still had problems with the engines (I got a recall notice for my 06 to have the engine tested). Not too sure on the 07+ but they still use the qr25...

They are decent cars because of all the features you get for the price, but long term, they are money pits. Mine has 92k miles and I have a list of things that I've had to replace that I think have worn premature.

Well, yeah, this forum could be known as the Home of the Hasty Generalzation.

Could you elaborate more on the fear?
Are you still holding the same thoughts that you had in the 70-80's?

Yeah...I'm laughing too because you believe Consumer Reports.

+1

I've seen a few that were pure junk, but I also know of a few that are doing quite well...

The 1st gen Muranos are the same, judging from the issues being posted on the forum. The issues are really no worse than some of the wear issues I had with my Saturn, but it is still unacceptable.

Our Altima:

Crown Vic:

0-60 in 6.8 seconds and 1/4 mile in 14.8 sec at 97.5 mph. And it has a ton of low-end torque for in-town driving.

The Crown Vic does a 0-60 in 9.3. Even a 4-cyl Accord is faster than that.

Exactly right! Except in the case of the 02-03 2.5L, POS would be more apt. I know this from first hand experience, Nissan hung every owner (myself included) of a 2.5L out to dry. Didn't even extend the engine warranty for a known defect (precat) that would/will prematurely grenade the engine. NOT a matter of 'if' it would happen, but WHEN it would/will happen.

Add to that the rusting/rusted subframes, the endless crank angle/camshaft position sensor and frozen fuel filler tube issues, thus pos title.

Think the article is rather lame from the standpoint of not going back to research what the incentives were during said time period. As for the comments regarding the Altima being better looking than the current Accord and Camry, not saying very much, imo.

So, as I said in my thread regarding 'no more Nissan's for me', fool me once shame on you (Nissan), fool me twice shame on me.

The Asian marques that we get in, usually need very little work.

GM parts are cheaper than any other manufacturer in general. What parts do the GMs need? Sounds to me like more made up [censored] typical of this forum. I would put a GM car up any day against Nissan or Subaru for lower cost of ownership.

True, but the Altima was their top rated family sedan. Just wish Nissan could build a decent manual tranny.

Cops don't usually drive "stock" Crown Vics, as we all know I'm sure.

Certainly there are many faster vehicles on the road than police cars.

You can't outrun a Motorola though, as the saying goes. They don't need to be able to out-drag people to get them.

I've been pleasantly surprised at the parts cost on my Subie, its very reasonable, at least on the parts I've had to buy so far. The all-data labor times are low too, its a pretty easy car to work on.

Most of the major repairs on the GM cars have fallen under the warranty, the Outlook's love to puke steering racks around 30K miles and PS pumps around 50K miles, not to mention the tranny's that get replaced around 60K miles, good o'le GM quality I tell ya.

If you have one of these vehicles, you better hope its a warranty repair, a steering rack out of pocket is about $1200 installed.

If you want to see some outrageous parts cost, take a look at Kia, lol.

The gearing for Police Interceptor Crown Vics is either 3.27 or 3.55 -- a regular Crown Vic may be 2.73 or 3.08. It depends on the year, but in general, the police crown vics have shorter gearing in the rear.

Not a surprise response from a GM guy, but why shoot the messenger just because you don't like the message?

I can tell you from personal experience GM has the best front wheel drive transmission (4 speed auto) in existence. Was told that by a transmission shop. The 6 speeds haven't been out long enough to really tell. If you take care of the transmission (change oil, filter (every 25-30K), the trans will last 200K+ miles.

Ha, this says it all for me. Worthless rag IMO.
