My next oil change is due on 1500 miles( I drive 30 to 40k miles per year, miles add up quick). I used M1 EP my last change. Seems like good stuff however with the price, its hard to justify. I was thinking of just sticking with M1 and dealing with the cost or going to something like PP or Castrol Syntec. I can't make up my mind. I have a brand spanking new engine, wear protection is the most important thing to me. Please cast your votes for what you think I should go with. I plan to stick with full synthetic, and 3000 mile OCI for warranty reasons. Thanks

2007 Chevrolet AVEO

Heck, for the price, PP would serve you very well. Especially considering you drive so much, you'd be saving a good chunk of change with the AAP BOGO. $3 a quart isn't too shabby! Big Lots has Havoline Synthetic for $3 a quart also, if you're lucky enough to find some at your location. Both have shown to be great oils.

Forgot to mention my E-TEC is a high revving engine. Getting onto Highways and such it sometimes is in the 4500rpm range until up to speed. I need some good stuff. I used M1 in my Bonnevill, PP and Syntec in my Cutlass, and started the AVEO out with M1. I have never had a bad experience with any of them, that is probably why I am having such a hard time desiding on which one I will go with, and the next oil I use I plan to use for the life time of the car.

For that Holden Engine Corp motor

1. Amsoil ASL------------Their best
2. Amsoil XL------------Good enough for 3K
3. Pennzoil Platinum---Great Oil
4. Mobil1---------------Very Good Oil
5. Mobil1 EP-----------Also Very Good, but why spend more for just 3K.
6. Castrol-------------Very Good Oil

Scheafers, Valvoline, Havoline, Quakerstate, Redline, etc, etc. for 3K would be great too. EVEN Wally World oil.

Any of the above with an Amsoil EaO29 filter.

Those should do.

If you do not like ordering oil and filters then just get Standard Mobil1 4W-30 and be done with it. Just get a good filter too.

Wow, 13 X 3000 mile synthetic oil changes a year?! Why not go with an API Certified oil like Amsoil XL5w30 and only do 5 X 7500 severe mile oil changes? This oil and change interval will meet your new car warranty requirements and even come with one of its own. How many miles before your factory warranty runs out?

I have always used Syth. i love everything about syth. I have used sythetice since my very first car, and the times I was experimenting with my piston slapping cutlass and ran conventional, it just didn't feel right, and drove me nuts until I couldn't take it anymore and put synthetic back in. Yes the AVEO is an inexpensive car, no the less, it has to last me 180,000 miles until the loan runs out.(72 months). I will treat this car the same as I did my more expensive cars.

The 100K powertrain warranty is now standard issue for both new and Certified Used GM cars.

Is there no OLM in the Aveo? If you're doing 3,000 mile oil changes I wouldn't waste my money on synthetic either. With my 2006 Monte Carlo I'm going by the OLM and putting in M1. Once my driving becomes more highway and less short trips, I think I'll be doing around a 5-6K OCI. Are you sure the Aveo manual calls for 3K changes? If you're doing nothing but highway driving in that little car I really feel like you can go longer than 3K, especially with an oil like M1 EP (though I think M1 is just as good, with less cost).

BTW, my 3900, despite its 242hp, still manages to find its way up to (and past) 4500 rpm when getting on the highway.

HACCOFFICER:

If you insist on: a) 3k mile OCIs and, b) a synthetic oil, then I'd suggest Pennzoil Platinum from Advance Auto Parts as part of their BOGO sale. Use a Purolater Premium Plus oil filter and happy motoring!

Agree... Pennzoil Platinum or Quaker State synthetic. Both of these are good buys right now. Even when not on sale, Walmart has the five quart jug for just under $20. Grab a Supertech filter while you are there.

I uhh... fourth or fifth the pennzoil platinum.

Read your manual again, you sure it specifies 3000 mile oil changes? Seems pretty low, and I think my grand am said just change when the OLM said to change it.

You don't fall under severe service at all. You could probally take that pennzoil platinum up to 10,000 miles easily on such a new car. I'd say aim for around there,7500 would be a good start, and if you ever have a warranty issue, tell them you change it out every 3k. The engine will be so clean they wont have any reason to not belive you.

I agree with the rest that Havoline or PP would be your most cost effective bet if you insist on synthetic but with the 3k OCI's I would just go with Castrol GTX. Best of luck with your decision.

Stick with Mobil 1 (not the Extended Performance). Best oil I`ve ever used. Castrol Syntec was the worst.

The owner's manual actually calls for 3K OCI's? Is this only for severe service?

If you're stuck on using synthetic, I'd definitely use PP and stock up at the BOGO price since it's almost the same as what you'll pay for conventional oil.

3k oil changes and synthetic? Craziness! At 3K, use any modern dino oil and fuhgetaboutit. If you insist on synthetic, go at least 7500K miles and use the PP with the BOGO special at AA. You'll never have to worry about engine lube/wear problems in either case barring some hidden engine problem or flaw.

3k oil chance is PERFECTO with Motorcraft. Heck, I should know since it is in my crankcase now. I can tell you my RPMs and throttle response improved incredibly like a different car. I am on it for 4500 miles so far and it runs almost perfect so I know for 3k it will be a proven winner.

MOTORCRAFT for 3k, I promise! Plus the Boron is a great agent, arguably the same as the 'Borates' M1 used for its PAOs when it was Grp IV, albeit different chemistry but still arguably derived from Boron. Try MC for 3k.
