It's too bad that the 'Skyactive' version costs a couple of grand (I think) more than the regular (less fuel efficient) version.

No kidding. That negates any fuel savings for at least a couple years depending on how much you drive. It does sound like a nice upgrade, I just hope it's worth the cost. I'd be willing to bet the regular 2.0 will still get the most sales.
 
Nothing new here. It's a Miller cycle engine just like the one they offered in the Millenia years ago.

It has great potential mileage but it seems to get lost in real world driving.

That's the thing though. Everything new. It's a totally new take on IC engines. I personally find the philosophy very refreshing in the copycat automotive world.
