1st Hello to everyone, I have a 2005 Dodge diesel, since new I have used 15 w 40 dello 400 changed every 7500 miles, I went to 7,500 because that was about as much as I could afford due to the oil capacity. On the last oil change I bought Delvac 1300 it was on sale (? why) buy 1 get 1 free so I bought enough for 2 more changes, anyway I am at 70,000 miles and can afford a little better protection, I really like the bypass system from Amsoil but cant really see paying a little over twice as much for Amsoil oil, I would have to go to 15,000 miles to make it pay for itself. If anyone owns one of these Dodges would no that the oil gets so black immediately after cranking and I feel i am pressing my luck going 7,500 miles. Has anyone installed the bypass and does it help keep the oil clear, also how would it work running it with regular dello 400 oil. I have been trying to find theparts to build my own system. I no they make filters for industril use, but havent gotten in to it to deep yet.

the 5.9 cummins is actually very easy on oil, turning black is no indication of oil condition. you are already using a very good oil, and bypass filtration is obviously better but is it necessary? i would do a used oil analysis and see where you are at, at the very least set a baseline of how your current oil/oil filter combination are holding up. then you can make an imformed decision if a change is really warrented

You'll likely be perfectly fine with OCIs every 7.5k miles on the Delvac 1300 in your ISB. Delvac has turned in some excellent used oil analysis in many different engines (ISB, Dmax, PSD, Kubota, various motorcycles, etc). Color is not typically an indication of performance, presuming all mechanical systems are in good working order.

Synthetic fluids and bypass filtration are good tools, but only if you can use them long enough. If not, they waste money and provide little else.

BTW - check your math. Amsoil fluids would likely cost 4x (four times) as much money. When you can get Delvac BOGOF, that equates to about $1.63/quart. Most Amsoil stuff is WELL above that, even with a "preferred" account. And then you have to consider the initial cost of the bypass system, plus the extra cost of added filters, etc. When it's all said and done, many people simply cannot make the systems pay for themselves. I know a few people that have actually walked away from high-end products after trying them, and gone back to good ol' "normal" oil and filters, and their rigs were none the less protected.
