I have a 2005 Dodge diesel, used dello 400 since new, next 3 changes will be mobil delvac 1300 (6$ a gallon at W-M.
The truck is driven daily 12 miles 1 way to work, sits all day then 12 miles back, on this diesel the truck never reaches full temp in any thing cooler than 40 degrees, the thermostat never opens, A winter front did not help and it has only gotten down to 30 degrees F here, this is bad on oil I no but I do get to go on a trip every weekend minimum 50 to 100 miles 1 way trip then back. I have been changing at 7,500 miles and using wix filters. I am changing to a new oil filter (Fleetguard LF9028) a venturi bypass filter, and will run this filter 15,000 miles before changing, Cost will be the same so this is not a cost savings idea. Do you guys think it would be better on the oil to continue doing a oil change at 7,500 miles, or would replacing a gallon of oil every 3,000 miles until it reaches 15,000 miles then replace it all. I no this is conventional oil but it seems the additives would be better replenished this way. The filter is a higher dollar filter but I got a good deal on a case from a friend who owns a fleet of trucks and the time to do the tinkering is no problem as I like messing with the truck.

Thanks

Sorry for the long post hard to explaing

If the question is to extend the OCI out to 15K, with conventional oil I'd vote no. Filtering is besides the point, a filter will not catch all the soot. The consumption of the additive pack (the viscosity modifiers), eventual fuel dilution, and soot buildup guides my thinking. Just my $.02.

If your driving pattern were different (longer trips, getting engine fully warm) were different, I would say the 1 gal/3K mi bypass change plan for 15K would be fine. However, with the short trips, be careful. Why don't you do a used oil analysis at 7.5K mi looking especially for soot and fuel. Then, if low, and viscosity still OK, extend to 15K. Doing the 3K mi 1 gal bypass change.
