is it ok to use different brands of synthetic oil at each individual oil change? or will the residue left from the drain mixing with the new oil cause problems? i'm looking to use the cheapest synthetic i can find at the time of the oil change.

There shouldn't be any harm at all. I do the exact same thing except with conventional oil. With the hundreds of thousands of miles I've accumulated on several vehicles I service, any problem would have shown itself by now.

I even mix together different oils, make my own blend. as long as they are all SM, there is no problem. right on the label, it will say : compatible with all brands of motor oil. there are no two SM oils that you can mix together, and cause any untoward effect. currently i am running a 50:50 mix of 5w20:5w30 - I mix different viscosity, different brand, and dino with synthetic, and it all works great. oil is wonderful stuff, at least the new SM versions.

in my transmission i have a mix of Penn synchromesh, ST 75w90 gear oil, and Mobil 5w30 synthetic, and my transmission works quite well, too.

You're joking right??

i didn't come up with this concoction on my own, i read a nice long explanation about NV transmission fluid, and thought i'd give it a try to see what happens. the only rollup the rim i know about is from Tim Horton's - is there another one?

if i'm going with the main purpose of saving $$, and my OCI's are going to be 2750-3000 miles, is there any point to synthetic or should i just go conventional? i'll search for recommendations on conventionals. if anyone is sure there aren't any recommendations in the forums, i'd appreciate one. Thanks guys

The US military mandated that all motor oils be compatible long ago. Residue will be no issue at all, unless it's filthy, runny tar...

How about telling us the year/make/model of your car and driving conditions?

'04 toyota matrix, ~45k miles, automatic. it's a daily driver, about 20 miles round trip daily, mostly flat roads, not dusty, so. cal temperatures.

Personally, I'd use synthetic and run it longer... say 7-8K miles. But if you insist on 3K OCI, then mineral oil will be fine. People here speak highly of Pennzoil conventional for example. I'm sure there are others...
