Hey everyone, though I've been a reader for a while, this is my first post on BITOG.I have a 2005 Mazda6 with the 3.0 V6 Duratec. I had to get an oil filter relocation kit(I chose to get a dual filter kit) to clear my new set of headers. I installed 2 Mobil M-301 filters with 7 quarts of Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w-20. I've always used standard M1, but I wanna try to get as many miles out of my oil as possible.

My plan is to drain a small amount of oil for a used oil analysis at 10k, and try to stretch it to at least 15k. I would like to hear what everyone else thinks about this idea.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Looking forward to seeing the used oil analysis. With the sort of filter kit you have, I would anticipate that you could significantly extend the filter changes, 30k+ miles, if the used oil analysis looks decent with respect to insolubles.

I'm glad to hear. I'm a spirited driver, and the car does rarely see some short track time, so I highly doubt I'll get to 30k before the oil is shot.

Yeah, oil may not get there. Filters probably could without issues. Too bad we don't have a good way of evaluating filter life, like we do with oil.

I'd start with early used oil analysis. If you have new items in there, including gaskets, I'd run a few very short intervals of (maybe) a cheaper oil to get junk out of there, silicon RTV, etc. rom showing up in UOA.

I wouldn't go beyond 7500 miles on the first UOA. 6000 is probably better. Not the best procedure, but I'd just crack the drain plug and pull a sample. Let a bit come out then dump it, then take a real sample. Youll only waste a little bit. This will produce good information and give you a feel. I likely wouldnt go beyond 10k the first time anyway, so pull a sample at 6 to see if it is a good idea - then drain and sample at 10k. The next time, if all is well, I'd do 7500 and 12500, and if all is well, then I'd do 7500 or 10k and 15k miles.

I have an 04' Mazda6s, and i've done extended drains using Amsoil ASM 0w20. I switched to the regular Mobil 1 0w20, because I felt the engine ran smoother and revved freer than the Amsoil.
For your OCI, i would stick with the extended Mobil 1, and like you said see what the used oil analysis looks like at the 10k mark.

Thanks for the help everyone. From what I've been hearing, I think I'm going to follow through with my original plan. If anyone else wishes to comment, I welcome the input.
