New video card or add a second one?

On my gaming rig I have a BIOSTAR TA870U3+ AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard, 2 stick of G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666), AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition overclocked at 3.9 GHz and a ASUS CuCore Series EAH5770 1GB GDDR5 but only 128-bit. I've noticed on one of my games it's a tad bit laggy, is it worth upgrading to something like a GTX 560 Ti or adding another another 5770? I could never get FSX to max out.

But the rest of my games are pretty good.
 
I run two 5770s in crossfire, and it gives performance about equal to a 5870, high in some cases. If you have the room, cooling, and power supply to handle one, I'd pick up another one for now- they are cheap. Or just pick up a 6870 and be done with it. Or wait a bit for the 7870.
 
The limiting factor in the newer games is not in the GPU horsepower, but rather in the available GPU memory. It's the 1GB that's hurting you most, I'd bet.

I'd check Craigslist or eBay for a used card, run it in Crossfire, and see how it does. Way cheaper than starting over with a 560 Ti (which I just bought, BTW). Worst thing that happens is it doesn't improve much and you just sell both and buy something new.
 
If you're looking to increase performance specifically in FSX, be very careful with video card upgrades.

Being a truly free form simulator, it is impossible for a developer to create individual frames for all situations, like a typical game is developed. FSX renders each frame on the fly. The CPU creates the image in real time, then sends the rendering instructions to the GPU. There is a massive buffer in between to smooth any situations where the CPU hasn't provided enough frames or the GPU hasn't had time to draw them. This buffer is incredibly taxing on the CPU. It's a HUGE bucket to fill. It's that way for a reason. If the CPU were to provide the GPU with too many frame instructions, the GPU would be unable to draw the next frame and you have what's called stalling.

Basically, FSX is CPU bound by design. This is especially true since GPU performance has grown by leaps and bounds since FSX was released. CPU performance has increased, but not nearly the increases AMD and Nvidia have had with the GPU. So, as it stands, most of the time your GPU is just hanging out waiting to be fed instructions by the CPU, having drawn the last frame long ago. Of course, you can work the GPU a bit harder by letting it draw a nicer picture with some AA and anisotripic filtering. If it's more frames you seek, it's all on the CPU to send more.

That you're having issues is odd. You have a modern processor. While FSX only utilizes two cores for instructions, your clock speed is pretty good, and that's a plus. A 5770 isn't a slouch either. My 2600K and old GTX260 ran without a hiccup, even in high autogen locations like Seattle. I do keep my autogen elements in check a bit, but details are all maxed.
 
I noticed significant bump in performance going from a single (water-cooled and overclocked) 6970 to dual 6970's, with a Phenom II X6 1100T (at 4.5ghz) and 32GB of G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3-1600 RAM (timings down to 7-8-7-26 or so; HT is OC'd to 2800mhz). Granted, having a 3-circuit external-enclosure water cooling system allows for a lot of leeway with overclocking, but I keep temps well below the danger zone with a 25% overclock on the 6970's, and Prime95 has run for 48hrs straight without a hiccup. Recently upgraded to an ASUS Crosshair V board and really like it.

I would wait to do ANYTHING until the Radeon 7xxx series is out in full-swing. Prices for the 68xx/69xx will drop, as the 7xxx perform crazy-good (7970 is ~60-75% faster than the 6970!). Makes me wanna upgrade REALLY bad!
If I do, I will PM you if you are interested in some used 6970's (they have had full-enclosure pure copper water blocks on them since they came out of the package, so the fans and everything don't even have 1 minute of run-time; they have been kept very cool with refrigerated coolant and each card being the first "stop" on their individual circuits). I have no idea what they are going for now, but let me know... Although, I would much prefer to get rid of them as a pair... And I still haven't made up my mind, as $599 for a 7970 is a bit much yet; and I wanna see what the 7990 will do!
