New vehicle has 5 engine idle hours

Should see some of our fleet vehicles... One of the trucks I recently used is a 2022 F150 with just under 5000 hours of idling time... (There are work reasons for this idling time - not just wasting gas...)

Wouldn't sweat 5 hours at delivery at all!
 
Again, that's what the warranty requires. I have a lifetime warranty. A "guy I know" uses 5 quarts of 5W-20 in his Ram for the receipts and sneaks in 2 quarts of 10W-30.
Ahhh, the old "lifetime warranty". Well, being a 2015, that's a pretty good idea, since that's still within the era prone to lifter failure.

It was $2400 and easily paid for itself after failures of water pump, fuel pump and a $1300 power side folding mirror with auto-dimming. They have fixed other items as well. Too bad no longer available. No doubt they were losing money on them. Mine has a tick at startup but goes away when it warms up. 99% sure it's the broken exhaust manifold stud I found. That plus another side mirror is not folding in via switch and other things will get repaired in August.

ETA: this is a factory Chrysler MaxCare warranty. Not a gimmick lifetime warranty where the dealer requires you to come in for every little maintenance line item to stay in compliance. I can do my own service.

Yes, that sounds like a manifold, they are notorious for it, every one of ours has had them done.
 
My last truck had almost 8 hrs idling. They are often left idling at the factory as they are moved from validation and then staged for shipping. Then again they are started and left running before loading and unloading. I have been told they leave them running sometimes to assure the battery is charged.
 
I think in the next few years you're going to start seeing a lot of manufacturers rolling back on all of these factory water thin oil recommendations. GM has already done it, because they are experiencing an unusually high failure rate with their 6.2L, V8. They've gone from an original factory spec of 0W-20, to a 0W-40.

They're certainly not doing this because 0W-20 is a more, "stout oil". They're doing it because all of these water thin oils lack the necessary film strength to provide proper protection under high temperature / high load conditions that many of these vehicles operate in.

This whole water thin oil bandwagon has come about because of government CAFE mileage standards being shoved down these manufacturers throats. Now that this is starting to cost the manufacturers money, instead of the customers, because of in warranty failure rates, they're going to do something about it.

Losing money on CAFE credits is far cheaper than multi billion dollar in warranty engine replacements.

I agree it's too thin for a V8 but do not see anything in the 2026 owner's manual about alternate oil weights. The manual for our Yukon also has specifications for the 6.2L. Was this a TSB that was released?
 
Probably good for break in, I wouldn't expect anything less, in the northern States during snowstorms and lot snow cleaning, the vehicles get alot more idle time than that. Next time, check before you buy, too late to complain about nothing this time.
Can you explain why that would be good for break in? I’ve never heard that take before…
 
We purchased a new Yukon with the 5.3L that had around 50 miles on it. I was mainly focused on getting the purchase price down but did check interior/exterior for any flaws. I did not think to check the idle hours because it was new. I am going to reply to the general sales manager who followed up with us after the sale but not likely they will care. With the lifter issues some vehicles can suffer from that hour figure is less than ideal.

Was going to do any early oil change anyway but a little frustrating to find when clearing the trip odometer for the first time after fueling up. It currently has 6 hours of idle time and I am estimating we did not idle it anywhere near an hour since we purchased it a week ago. I'm guessing high hours are from test drives and customers sitting in it for extended periods of time while the salesman explains the features.
I watched my Z06 built. I estimate it probably had a good bit of idle time before it left the plant. Idling in the leak-test booth. Idling here, idling there, idling at the test track (they drive it over a ton of bumps and stuff to make sure nothing creaks or squeaks out of spec bad), then idling on the truck, idling on the lot, idling in the service area while waiting to get PDI'ed, not to mention a few test drives and the sales rep will always sit in the vehicle with the client while they try out the NAV and all that nonsense, maybe for a half hour if they're really into it, etc. I personally would think absolutely zero about 5 idle hours on a new vehicle with 50mi cumulative, and I'm OCD as hell.

Seiously, Does idle mean "engine running in P only" or does idling include "engine running with speedometer at 0"?
It means engine on, vehicle in Park, based on my CVPI's metering habits.
